The Gibeonites' trick

when all the kings on this side of the Jordan heard about it — in the hills and in the lowland and on all the coast of the Great Sea opposite Lebanon, the Hittite and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite — they gathered together to fight Joshua and Israel as one. when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, they came up with a crafty plan. They went as though they were envoys, loading old sacks onto their donkeys and taking worn-out wineskins, cracked and patched. They wore old, patched sandals and shabby clothes, and all the bread they carried was dry and mouldy. They went to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel: We've come from a distant country. Now make a treaty with us. The Israelites said to the Hivites: For all we know, you live just down the road from us. How could we make a treaty with you? They said to Joshua: We're your servants. Joshua asked them: Who are you, and where have you come from? they said to him: Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of the Lord your God. Because we've heard about him and everything he did in Egypt, and everything he did to the two kings of the Amorites on the other side of the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan at Ashtaroth. So our elders and everyone living in our country spoke to us: Take supplies with you for the road and go to meet them, and say to them: We're your servants. So make a covenant with us now. Look at our bread. It was still warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. Now it's dry and mouldy. These wineskins were new when we filled them, and now they're split. And our clothes and sandals are worn out from the very long journey. The men of Israel sampled their provisions, but they didn't ask counsel from the Lord. Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them to let them live. And the leaders of the assembly swore to them. And three days after they'd made a covenant with them, they heard they were their neighbours and lived among them. the Israelites set out and came to their cities on the third day. And their cities were Gibeon and Kephirah and Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim. the Israelites didn't strike them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel. And the whole gathering grumbled against the leaders. But all the leaders said to the whole gathering: We've sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel. So now we can't touch them. This is what we'll do to them. We'll let them live, so there's no anger on us because of the oath we swore to them. The leaders said: Let them live, but make them woodcutters and water carriers for the whole community. So the leaders kept their promise to them. Joshua summoned them and said: Why did you trick us by saying, We live a long way from you, when you actually live right here among us? So now you're cursed, and none of you will stop being servants and woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God. They answered Joshua: Your servants were clearly told that the Lord your God commanded Moses his servant to give you this whole land and destroy all its people before you. We feared for our lives because of you, so we did this. Now we're in your hands. Do whatever you think is right. Joshua protected them from the Israelites, and they were not killed. And that day Joshua made them woodcutters and water carriers for the assembly and for the altar of the Lord, to this day, in the place he'd choose.

And when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, they worked cleverly and went and made out they were messengers. And they took old sacks on their donkeys, and wineskins that were old and torn and tied up, and old patched sandals on their feet and old clothes on them. And all the bread of their supply was dry and mouldy. And they went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal and said to him and to the men of Israel: We've come from a far country. So make a covenant with us now. And the men of Israel said to the Hivites: Maybe you live among us. So how can we make a covenant with you? And they said to Joshua: We're your servants. And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof; That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord. And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai, They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up; And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us. And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.
