Five kings against Gibeon

Now when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and completely destroyed it — just as he'd done to Jericho and its king, that's what he did to Ai and its king — and how the people of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them, they were very afraid. Because Gibeon was a great town, like one of the royal cities, and because it was bigger than Ai and all its men were strong. So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron and to Piram king of Jarmuth and to Japhia king of Lachish and to Debir king of Eglon: Come up to me and help me, and let's strike Gibeon. Because it's made peace with Joshua and with the Israelites. So the five kings of the Amorites gathered and went up — the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon — they and all their armies. And they camped in front of Gibeon and made war against it. the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal: Don't hold back your hand from your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us and help us. Because all the kings of the Amorites who live in the hills have gathered against us. So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the fighting men with him, and all the strong men. The Lord said to Joshua: Don't be afraid of them. I've given them into your hand. Not one of them will stand against you. So Joshua came on them suddenly. He went up from Gilgal all night. The LORD threw them into a panic in front of Israel and struck them down in a great slaughter at Gibeon. He chased them by the way that goes up to Beth Horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. as they ran from in front of Israel, going down to Beth Horon, the Lord threw down great stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than the Israelites killed with the sword.

Now when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and completely wrecked it — the way he'd done to Jericho and its king, that's what he did to Ai and its king — and how the people of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them, they were very frightened. Because Gibeon was a great town, like one of the royal towns, and because it was bigger than Ai and all its men were strong. So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron and to Piram king of Jarmuth and to Japhia king of Lachish and to Debir king of Eglon: Come up to me and help me, and let's strike Gibeon. Because it's made peace with Joshua and with the people of Israel. So the five kings of the Amorites gathered and went up — the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon — they and all their armies. And they camped in front of Gibeon and made war against it. And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal: Don't hold back your hand from your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us and help us. Because all the kings of the Amorites who live in the hills have gathered against us. So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the fighting men with him, and all the strong men. And the Lord said to Joshua: Don't be frightened of them, because I've handed them over into your hand. Not a man of them will stand in front of you. So Joshua came on them suddenly. He went up from Gilgal all night. And the Lord threw them into a panic in front of Israel, and struck them down with a great killing at Gibeon. And he chased them by the way that goes up to Beth Horon, and struck them right to Azekah and Makkedah. And as they ran from in front of Israel, going down to Beth Horon, the Lord threw down great stones from heaven on them right to Azekah, and they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than the people of Israel killed with the sword.

Now it came to pass, when Adonizedec king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them; That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty. Wherefore Adonizedec king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying, Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel. Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it. And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us. So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour. And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee. Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night. And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah. And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

Sun, stand still

On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua spoke to the Lord in front of Israel: Sun, stand still over Gibeon; and moon, over the Valley of Aijalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation had taken vengeance on its enemies. Isn't this written in the Book of Jasher? The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and did not hurry to go down for about a whole day. There has never been a day like it before or since, when the Lord listened to the voice of a man like that. For the Lord fought for Israel. Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

Then Joshua spoke to the Lord on the day the Lord handed the Amorites over in front of the people of Israel. And he said in the sight of Israel: Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and moon, over the Valley of Aijalon. And the sun stood still and the moon stayed, till the people had paid back the ones against them. Isn't this written in the book of Jashar? So the sun stood still in the middle of the sky and didn't hurry to go down about a whole day. And there hasn't been a day like that before it or after it, when the Lord listened to the voice of a man. Because the Lord fought for Israel. And Joshua came back, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel. And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

The kings in the cave

But those five kings ran and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah. Joshua was told: The five kings are found, hidden in a cave at Makkedah. Joshua said: Roll great stones over the mouth of the cave and set men by it to keep them. But don't stop there. Keep chasing your enemies and cut off their rear guard. Don't let them get back into their cities, because the Lord your God has given them into your hand. Joshua and the Israelites killed them in a very great slaughter until they were almost completely destroyed, though some survivors escaped into the fortified cities. all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace. Nobody said a word against any of the Israelites. Then Joshua said: Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me from the cave. they did, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave — the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon. when they'd brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua called for all the men of Israel and said to the captains of the fighting men who went with him: Come near and put your feet on the necks of these kings. And they came near and put their feet on their necks. Joshua said to them: Don't be afraid and don't lose heart. Be strong and steady. Because this is what the Lord will do to all your enemies that you fight. after that Joshua struck them and killed them and hung them on five trees. And they were hanging on the trees till evening. when the sun was going down, Joshua told them to take them down off the trees and throw them into the cave they'd hidden in. And they laid great stones over the mouth of the cave, that are there to this very day.

Don't let them come into their towns. Because the Lord your God has handed them over into your hand. And when Joshua and the people of Israel had finished killing them with a very great killing till they were finished, and the ones left of them had got into the fortified towns, all the people came back to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace. And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities. And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel. The southern campaign

And that day Joshua took Makkedah and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king he completely destroyed, them and everyone in it. He didn't let anyone stay. And he did to the king of Makkedah what he'd done to the king of Jericho. Then Joshua went from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to Libnah, and fought against Libnah. the Lord handed it over into the hand of Israel too, and its king. And he struck it with the edge of the sword, and everyone in it. He didn't let anyone stay in it. And he did to its king what he'd done to the king of Jericho. Joshua went from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish, and camped against it and fought against it. the Lord handed Lachish over into the hand of Israel, and they took it on the second day and struck it with the edge of the sword, and everyone in it, the same as everything he'd done to Libnah. Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish. And Joshua struck him and his people, till he'd left him nobody. Joshua went from Lachish to Eglon, and all Israel with him. And they camped against it and fought against it. they took it that day and struck it with the edge of the sword. And everyone in it he completely destroyed that day, the same as everything he'd done to Lachish. Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, to Hebron, and they fought against it. they took it and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and all its cities and everyone in it. He didn't leave anyone, the same as everything he'd done to Eglon. But he completely destroyed it and everyone in it. Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fought against it. He took Debir, its king and all its towns. They struck them with the sword and completely destroyed everyone in them, leaving no survivors. Joshua did to Debir and its king just what he had done to Hebron, Libnah and their kings. So Joshua struck the whole region — the hill country, the south, the lowlands and the slopes — together with all their kings. He left no survivors, but completely destroyed everything that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded. Joshua struck them from Kadesh Barnea as far as Gaza, and all the country of Goshen as far as Gibeon. Joshua took all these kings and their land at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

And that day Joshua took Makkedah and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king he completely wrecked, them and everyone in it. He didn't let anyone stay. And the Lord handed it over into the hand of Israel too, and its king. And he struck it with the edge of the sword, and everyone in it. He didn't let anyone stay in it. And he did to its king what he'd done to the king of Jericho. And Joshua went from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish, and camped against it and fought against it. And he took it and its king and all its towns, and they struck them with the edge of the sword and completely wrecked everyone in it. He didn't leave anyone. The way he'd done to Hebron, that's what he did to Debir and its king, and the same as he'd done to Libnah and its king. So Joshua struck all the country of the hills and of the south and of the lowland and of the slopes, and all their kings. He didn't leave anyone, but completely wrecked everything that breathed, the way the Lord God of Israel ordered. And Joshua struck them from Kadesh Barnea right to Gaza, and all the country of Goshen right to Gibeon. And Joshua took all these kings and their land at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. And Joshua came back, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho. Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah: And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho. And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it: And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah. Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining. And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it: And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish. And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it: And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein. And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it: And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king. So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded. And Joshua smote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon. And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel. And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
