The ambush at Ai
The Lord said to Joshua: Don't be afraid and don't lose heart. Take all the fighting men with you and head up to Ai. See, I've given the king of Ai, his people, his city and his land into your hand. And you'll do to Ai and its king what you did to Jericho and its king. Only its loot and its livestock you'll take as plunder for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it. So Joshua and all the fighting men set out for Ai. Joshua chose thirty thousand capable fighters and sent them off at night. he told them: Look — you'll lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Don't go very far from the city, and all of you be ready. And I and all the people with me will come near the city. And when they come out against us like the first time, we'll run from them. They'll come out after us till we've drawn them from the city. Because they'll say: They're running from us like the first time. So we'll run from them. Then you'll get up from the ambush and take the city. Because the Lord your God will hand it over into your hand. when you've taken the city, you'll set the city on fire. You'll do according to the word of the Lord. See — I've commanded you. So Joshua sent them off, and they went to lie in ambush and stayed between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai. But Joshua stayed among the people that night. Joshua rose early in the morning and mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, in front of the people to Ai. all the fighting men with him went up and came near and came before the city, and camped on the north side of Ai. Now there was a valley between them and Ai. he took about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city. Once the main force was in position north of the city and the ambush was west of it, Joshua went into the valley that night. when the king of Ai saw it, they hurried and rose early. And the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a set time in front of the plain. But he didn't know there was an ambush behind the city. Joshua and all Israel let themselves be beaten before them, and ran by the way of the wilderness. all the people in Ai were called together to chase them. And they chased Joshua and were drawn away from the city. there wasn't a man left in Ai or Bethel who didn't go out after Israel. And they left the city open and chased Israel. the Lord said to Joshua: Stretch out the spear in your hand towards Ai, because I'll hand it over into your hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear in his hand towards the city. the ambush got up quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he'd stretched out his hand. And they came into the city and took it, and hurried and set the city on fire. when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw the smoke of the city going up to the sky, and they had no power to run this way or that. And the people who ran to the wilderness turned back on their pursuers. when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and the smoke of the city was going up, then they turned back and struck down the men of Ai. the others came out of the city against them, so they were in the middle of Israel, some on this side and some on that side. And they struck them down, so they let none of them stay or get away. they took the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua. When Israel had finished killing all the people of Ai in the fields and wilderness where they had chased them, and every last one had fallen by the sword, all Israel returned to Ai and struck it with the sword. Twelve thousand men and women fell that day — all the people of Ai. Joshua did not lower the spear he had stretched out until everyone living in Ai had been completely destroyed. Only the livestock and the loot of that city Israel took as plunder for themselves, according to the word of the Lord he commanded Joshua. Joshua burned Ai and left it a permanent heap of ruins, as it remains to this day. He hanged the king of Ai on a tree until evening. At sunset Joshua ordered them to take the body down, throw it at the entrance of the city gate and raise a great heap of stones over it, which remains to this day.
And the Lord said to Joshua: Don't be frightened and don't fall apart. Take all the fighting men with you and get up and go to Ai. Look — I've handed over into your hand the king of Ai and his people and his town and his land. And you'll do to Ai and its king what you did to Jericho and its king. Only its loot and its cattle you'll take as plunder for yourselves. Set an ambush for the town behind it. So Joshua got up, and all the fighting men, to go up to Ai. And Joshua picked out thirty thousand strong fighting men and sent them off at night. And he ordered them: Look — you'll lie in ambush against the town, behind the town. Don't go very far from the town, and all of you be ready. And I and all the people with me will come near the town. And when they come out against us like the first time, we'll run from them. And when they'd set the people, the whole army on the north of the town and the ones lying in wait on the west of the town, Joshua went that night into the middle of the valley. And when the king of Ai saw it, they hurried and got up early. And the men of the town went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a set time in front of the plain. But he didn't know there was an ambush behind the town. And Joshua and all Israel let themselves be beaten in front of them, and ran by the way of the wilderness. And they took the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua. And when Israel had finished killing everyone living in Ai in the field, in the wilderness where they chased them, and when they'd all fallen by the edge of the sword till they were finished, all the Israelites came back to Ai and struck it with the edge of the sword. And all who fell that day, men and women, were twelve thousand, all the people of Ai. And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land: And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it. So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night. And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready: And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them, (For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them. Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand. And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you. Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people. And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai. And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai. And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city. And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley. And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city. And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness. And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city. And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel. And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city. And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape. And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua. And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword. And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai. For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua. The altar on Mount Ebal
Then Joshua built an altar to the Lord God of Israel on Mount Ebal, just as Moses the servant of the Lord commanded the Israelites, as it's written in the Book of the Law of Moses — an altar of whole stones that nobody had lifted any iron on. And they offered burnt offerings on it to the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings. he wrote there on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, that he wrote in front of the Israelites. All Israel, including their elders, officers and judges, stood on both sides of the ark before the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the Lord's covenant. Foreigners and native-born Israelites stood together, half facing Mount Gerizim and half facing Mount Ebal, just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded earlier when he blessed the people of Israel. after that he read all the words of the law, the blessings and the curses, according to everything written in the Book of the Law. Joshua read every word Moses had commanded before the whole assembly of Israel, including the women, the children and the foreigners living among them.
Then Joshua built an altar to the Lord God of Israel on Mount Ebal, the way Moses the servant of the Lord ordered the people of Israel, as it's written in the book of the teaching of Moses — an altar of whole stones that nobody had lifted any iron on. And they offered burnt offerings on it to the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings. And he wrote there on the stones a copy of the teaching of Moses, that he wrote in front of the people of Israel. And all Israel and their elders and officers and judges stood on this side of the ark and on that side, in front of the priests, the Levites, who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord — the stranger the same as the one born among them — half of them in front of Mount Gerizim and half in front of Mount Ebal, the way Moses the servant of the Lord had ordered before, to bless the people of Israel. And after that he read all the words of the teaching, the blessings and the curses, according to everything written in the book of the teaching. There wasn't a word of everything Moses ordered that Joshua didn't read in front of the whole gathering of Israel, with the women and the little ones and the strangers who went among them.
Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal, As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings. And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel. And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel. And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law. There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.
