Joshua's charge to the leaders

A long time passed after the Lord had given Israel rest from all its enemies around them. Joshua was now old and getting on in years. Joshua called together all Israel — their elders, leaders, judges and officers — and said: I'm old and getting on in years. You've seen everything the Lord your God has done to these nations for your sake. The Lord your God himself has fought for you. Look — I've divided to you by lot these nations that are left, as an inheritance for your tribes, from the Jordan, with all the nations I've cut off, as far as the Great Sea westward. the Lord your God will push them out from before you and drive them from your sight. And you'll own their land, just as the Lord your God promised you. So be very strong. Keep and do everything written in the Book of the Law of Moses. Don't turn aside from it to the right or the left. Don't mix yourselves in with the nations still left among you. Don't even invoke the names of their gods, swear by them, serve them or bow down to them. Hold fast to the Lord your God, just as you have to this day. For the Lord has driven out great and strong nations from before you. But as for you, nobody has been able to stand before you to this day. One of you will chase a thousand, because the Lord your God himself fights for you, just as he promised. So watch yourselves carefully and love the Lord your God. But if you turn away and cling to the people of these nations still among you, intermarrying with them and mixing yourselves with them, know for certain that the Lord your God won't drive out any of these nations from before you any more. But they'll be traps and snares to you, and whips on your sides and thorns in your eyes, till you're destroyed off this good land the Lord your God has given you. Now I'm going the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good things the Lord your God promised you has failed. Every one of them has come true; not one has failed. Just as every good promise the Lord your God made to you has come true, so he will bring every threatened evil on you until he has removed you from this good land he gave you. If you break the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you to keep, and go off to serve and worship other gods, the Lord's anger will burn against you and you will quickly disappear from the good land he gave you.

And a long time after the Lord had given Israel rest from all the ones against them round about, Joshua was old and well on in years. And Joshua called all Israel, and their elders and their heads and their judges and their officers, and said to them: I'm old and well on in years. And you've seen everything the Lord your God has done to all these nations because of you. Because the Lord your God is the one who's fought for you. Look — I've divided to you by lot these nations that are left, as an inheritance for your tribes, from the Jordan, with all the nations I've cut off, right to the Great Sea westward. And the Lord your God will push them out from in front of you and drive them from your sight. And you'll own their land, the way the Lord your God promised you. So be very strong to keep and do everything written in the book of the teaching of Moses, so you don't turn aside from it to the right or the left — so you don't go among these nations, these ones left among you. And don't mention the name of their gods or swear by them or serve them or bow down to them. But stick to the Lord your God, the way you've done to this day. Because the Lord has driven out great and strong nations from in front of you. But as for you, nobody has been able to stand in front of you to this day. One man of you will chase a thousand. Because the Lord your God is the one who fights for you, the way he's promised you. So watch yourselves carefully, that you love the Lord your God. But if you ever turn back and stick to what's left of these nations, these ones left among you, and marry among them and go in to them and they to you — know for certain that the Lord your God won't drive out any of these nations from in front of you any more. But they'll be traps and snares to you, and whips on your sides and thorns in your eyes, till you're wrecked off this good land the Lord your God has given you. And look — today I'm going the way of all the earth. And you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things the Lord your God spoke about you. They've all come about for you. Not one thing of it has failed. So it'll be that the way every good thing has come on you that the Lord your God promised you, that's how the Lord will bring on you every bad thing, till he's wrecked you off this good land the Lord your God has given you. When you've stepped over the covenant of the Lord your God that he ordered you, and gone and served other gods and bowed down to them, then the anger of the Lord will burn against you, and you'll be finished quickly off the good land he's given you.

And it came to pass a long time after that the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and stricken in age. And Joshua called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and stricken in age: And ye have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the LORD your God is he that hath fought for you. Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward. And the LORD your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the LORD your God hath promised unto you. Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left; That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them: But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day. For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day. One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you. Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God. Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you: Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you. And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof. Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you. When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.
