The eastern tribes go home

Then Joshua called the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh, He said to them: You've done everything Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, and you've obeyed me in everything I commanded you. All this time, right up to today, you haven't abandoned your fellow Israelites. You've faithfully kept the command of the Lord your God. Now the Lord your God has given your fellow Israelites rest, just as he promised. So head home to your tents, to the land Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan. But be very careful to keep the command and the law Moses the servant of the Lord gave you: love the Lord your God, walk in all his ways, keep his commandments, hold fast to him, and serve him with all your heart and soul. So Joshua blessed them and sent them off, and they went to their tents. Now Moses had given a share in Bashan to half the tribe of Manasseh. But to the other half of it Joshua gave a share among their brothers on this side of the Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them off to their tents too, he blessed them. He said: Go home to your tents with great wealth — large herds, silver, gold, bronze, iron and plenty of clothing. Share the plunder from your enemies with your fellow tribesmen. the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh returned and left the Israelites at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, the land they possessed, that they owned according to the word of the Lord through Moses. when they came to the borders of the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan, a great altar to look at. the Israelites heard it said: Look — the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh have built an altar opposite the land of Canaan, in the borders of the Jordan, on the side of the Israelites. when the Israelites heard about it, the whole gathering of the Israelites came together at Shiloh to go up to war against them.

Then Joshua called the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh, and said to them: You've kept everything Moses the servant of the Lord ordered you, and you've listened to my voice in everything I ordered you. You haven't left your brothers these plenty of days right to this day, but you've kept the charge of the order of the Lord your God. And now the Lord your God has given your brothers rest, the way he promised them. So now turn back and go to your tents, to the land you own, that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. Only watch carefully to do the order and the teaching that Moses the servant of the Lord ordered you — to love the Lord your God and to walk in all his ways and to keep his orders and to stick to him, and to serve him with your whole heart and your whole soul. And he spoke to them: Go back to your tents with plenty of riches, and with very plenty of cattle, with silver and gold and bronze and iron and plenty of clothing. Divide the plunder of the ones against you with your brothers. And the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh went back and left the people of Israel at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, the land they owned, that they owned according to the word of the Lord through Moses. And when they came to the borders of the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan, a great altar to look at. And the people of Israel heard it said: Look — the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh have built an altar opposite the land of Canaan, in the borders of the Jordan, on the side of the people of Israel. And when the people of Israel heard about it, the whole gathering of the people of Israel came together at Shiloh to go up to war against them.

Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you: Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God. And now the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side Jordan. But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away: and they went unto their tents. Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them, And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren. And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses. And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to. And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel. And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up to war against them.

The altar of witness

the Israelites sent Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest to the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, and with him ten leaders, one leader of a father's house for each of the tribes of Israel. And each one was the head of a father's house among the thousands of Israel. they came to the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead and spoke to them: The whole assembly of the Lord says: What is this unfaithfulness you've committed against the God of Israel? Why have you turned away from following the Lord today by building yourselves an altar and rebelling against him? Is the wrongdoing of Peor too small for us, that we haven't cleaned ourselves of it to this day, though there was a plague in the assembly of the Lord — And now you're turning away from following the Lord? If you rebel against the Lord today, tomorrow he'll be angry with the whole assembly of Israel. But if the land you possess is unclean, then come over into the land the Lord owns, where the Lord's tent lives, and take what you own among us. But don't rebel against the Lord or rebel against us, by building yourselves an altar besides the altar of the Lord our God. Didn't Achan son of Zerah act unfaithfully over the devoted things and bring anger on the whole assembly of Israel? He wasn't the only one who died because of his sin. Then the Reubenites, Gadites and half-tribe of Manasseh answered the heads of Israel's clans: The Lord God of gods, the Lord God of gods — he knows, and Israel will know. If this was rebellion or unfaithfulness against the Lord, don't spare us today. If we built this altar to turn away from following the Lord, or to offer burnt offerings, grain offerings or peace offerings on it, let the Lord himself hold us to account. No. We did it because we were genuinely worried that one day your descendants might say to ours: What have you got to do with the Lord God of Israel? For the Lord has made the Jordan a border between us and you, you Reubenites and Gadites. You've got no share in the Lord. So your children might make our children stop fearing the Lord. So we said: Let's build an altar — not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you, and between the generations after us, that we have the right to serve the Lord before him with our burnt offerings, sacrifices and peace offerings. Then your descendants won't be able to say to ours: You have no share in the Lord. So we said: If they ever say that to us or our descendants, we'll answer: Look at this copy of the Lord's altar that our ancestors made. It wasn't for burnt offerings or sacrifices; it is a witness between us and you. We would never rebel against the Lord or turn away from following him today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings or sacrifices besides the altar of the Lord our God that stands before his tent. When Phinehas the priest and the leaders of the assembly heard what the descendants of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh said, they were satisfied. Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest said to them: Today we know the Lord is among us, because you haven't committed this unfaithfulness against him. You've saved the Israelites from the Lord's judgement. And Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest and the leaders returned from the Reubenites and the Gadites out of the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the Israelites, and brought them back word. the thing pleased the Israelites. And the Israelites blessed God and didn't talk any more about going up against them in battle to destroy the land where the Reubenites and Gadites lived. the Reubenites and the Gadites called the altar Ed — because it'll be a witness between us that the Lord is God.

And the people of Israel sent Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest to the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, and with him ten leaders, one leader of a father's house for each of the tribes of Israel. And each one was the head of a father's house among the thousands of Israel. And they came to the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead and spoke to them: This is what the whole gathering of the Lord says: What faith is this you've broken against the God of Israel, to turn away today from following the Lord, by building yourselves an altar so you'd rebel today against the Lord? Is the wrongdoing of Peor too small for us, that we haven't cleaned ourselves of it to this day, though there was a plague in the gathering of the Lord — that you have to turn away today from following the Lord? But don't rebel against the Lord or rebel against us, by building yourselves an altar besides the altar of the Lord our God. Didn't Achan son of Zerah break faith over what was set apart, and anger fell on the whole gathering of Israel? And that man didn't die on his own in his wrongdoing. Then the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh answered and said to the heads of the thousands of Israel: The Lord God of gods, the Lord God of gods, he knows, and Israel will know — if it was in rebellion or in breaking faith against the Lord, don't save us today. If we've built ourselves an altar to turn away from following the Lord, or to offer burnt offerings or grain offerings on it, or to offer peace offerings on it, let the Lord himself call it in. And if we haven't done it out of worry about this thing, saying: In time to come your children might speak to our children: What have you got to do with the Lord God of Israel? Because the Lord has made the Jordan a border between us and you, you Reubenites and Gadites. You've got no share in the Lord. So your children might make our children stop fearing the Lord. So we said: Let's get ready now and build ourselves an altar — not for burnt offering or for sacrifice, but so it can be a witness between us and you and our generations after us, that we can do the service of the Lord in front of him with our burnt offerings and our sacrifices and our peace offerings — so your children can't say to our children in time to come: You've got no share in the Lord. So we said: When they say this to us or to our generations in time to come, we'll say: Look at the copy of the altar of the Lord that our fathers made — not for burnt offerings or for sacrifices, but it's a witness between us and you. God forbid that we should rebel against the Lord and turn away today from following the Lord, by building an altar for burnt offerings, for grain offerings or for sacrifices, besides the altar of the Lord our God that's in front of his tent. And when Phinehas the priest and the leaders of the gathering and the heads of the thousands of Israel who were with him heard the words the Reubenites and the Gadites and the sons of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them. And Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest said to the Reubenites and the Gadites and the sons of Manasseh: Today we know the Lord is among us, because you haven't broken this faith against the Lord. Now you've got the people of Israel out of the hand of the Lord. And Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest and the leaders came back from the Reubenites and the Gadites out of the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the people of Israel, and brought them back word. And the thing pleased the people of Israel. And the people of Israel blessed God and didn't talk any more about going up against them in battle to wreck the land where the Reubenites and Gadites lived. And the Reubenites and the Gadites called the altar Ed — because it'll be a witness between us that the Lord is God.

And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel. And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying, Thus saith the whole congregation of the LORD, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the LORD, in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might rebel this day against the LORD? Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we are not cleansed until this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the LORD, But that ye must turn away this day from following the LORD? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to day against the LORD, that to morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel. Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD’s tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against the LORD, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the LORD our God. Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity. Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel, The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD, (save us not this day,) That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require it; And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the LORD God of Israel? For the LORD hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the LORD: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the LORD. Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice: But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD. Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you. God forbid that we should rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle. And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them. And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we perceive that the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD. And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again. And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt. And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the LORD is God.
