Joshua tells the story
Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel at Shechem and summoned Israel's elders, leaders, judges and officers. They presented themselves before God. Joshua said to all the people: This is what the Lord God of Israel says. Long ago your ancestors lived beyond the River — Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor — and they served other gods. And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the River and led him through all the land of Canaan, and made his offspring many and gave him Isaac. And I gave Jacob and Esau to Isaac. And I gave Mount Seir to Esau to own. But Jacob and his children went down into Egypt. Then I sent Moses and Aaron, struck Egypt with the plagues I brought on it, and afterwards brought you out. And I brought your fathers out of Egypt, and you came to the sea. And the Egyptians chased your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea. Your ancestors cried out to the Lord, and he put darkness between you and the Egyptians. He brought the sea over them and covered them. You saw with your own eyes what I did in Egypt. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time. And I brought you into the land of the Amorites who lived on the other side of the Jordan. And they fought you, and I handed them over into your hand, and you owned their land, and I destroyed them from before you. Then Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, set out and fought Israel and sent and called Balaam son of Beor to curse you. But I would not listen to Balaam. Instead, he blessed you again and again, and I rescued you from his hand. And you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. And the men of Jericho fought you — the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Girgashites, the Hivites and the Jebusites. And I handed them over into your hand. And I sent the hornet before you, and it drove them out from before you — the two kings of the Amorites — but not with your sword or with your bow. And I gave you a land you hadn't worked for, and cities you hadn't built, and you live in them. You eat of the vineyards and olive groves you didn't plant.

And if it seems wrong to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: the gods your ancestors served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. The people answered: God forbid that we should abandon the Lord to serve other gods. The Lord our God is the one who brought us and our ancestors up out of Egypt, out of slavery. He did those great signs before our eyes and protected us all along the road and among every nation we travelled through. the Lord drove out all the peoples before us, the Amorites who lived in the land. So we'll serve the Lord too, because he's our God. Joshua told the people: You can't serve the Lord casually. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not overlook your rebellion and your sins. If you abandon the Lord and serve foreign gods, he will turn against you, bring disaster on you and destroy you, even after doing you good. The people said to Joshua: No. We will serve the Lord. Joshua said: You are witnesses against yourselves that you've chosen the Lord and will serve him. They said: We are witnesses. Then put away the foreign gods among you, he said, and incline your hearts to the Lord God of Israel. The people said to Joshua: We will serve the Lord our God, and we will obey his voice. That day Joshua made a covenant with the people at Shechem and established rules and judgments for them there. Joshua said to all the people: Look — this stone will be a witness against us. Because it's heard all the words of the Lord that he spoke to us. The people said to Joshua: We will serve the Lord our God, and we will obey his voice.
And the people said to Joshua: We'll serve the Lord our God, and we'll listen to his voice.
And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.
That day Joshua made a covenant with the people at Shechem and established rules and judgments for them there.

Israel served the Lord throughout Joshua's lifetime and throughout the lifetime of the elders who outlived Joshua and knew everything the Lord had done for Israel. the bones of Joseph, that the Israelites brought up out of Egypt, they buried in Shechem, in a bit of ground Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of silver. And it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph. And Eleazar son of Aaron died. And they buried him in a hill that belonged to Phinehas his son, given him in Mount Ephraim.
