The prayer

From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. I called out to the Lord in the middle of it, and He answered me. From the belly of the grave I sang out, and You heard my voice. You threw me into the deep, right into the heart of the sea, and the current wrapped round me. Every breaker, every wave of Yours went straight over the top of me. I thought: I'm gone from Your sight for good. But I'll look toward Your holy temple again. The water closed over me, right to the throat. The deep had me. Weed wrapped round my head. I went down to the roots of the mountains. The earth shut its gates behind me, and that was that. But You brought my life up out of the pit, Lord, my God. When I was going under, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer got through to You, into Your holy temple. People who chase things that aren't there walk away from the one who'd have shown them mercy. But me — I'll bring You an offering, and I'll sing while I do it. What I promised, I'll pay. Rescue belongs to the Lord.

and He answered me.
From the belly of the grave I sang out,
and You heard my voice.

You threw me into the deep,
right into the heart of the sea,
and the current wrapped round me.
Every breaker, every wave of Yours
went straight over the top of me.

But I'll look toward Your holy temple again.

5

The water closed over me, right to the throat.
The deep had me.
Weed wrapped round my head.

6

I went down to the roots of the mountains.
The earth shut its gates behind me, and that was that.
But You brought my life up out of the pit,
Lord, my God.

7

When I was going under,
I remembered the Lord,
and my prayer got through to You,
into Your holy temple.

But me — I'll bring You an offering,
and I'll sing while I do it.
What I promised, I'll pay.
Rescue belongs to the Lord.
