Running from the Lord
The Lord spoke to Jonah son of Amittai: Get up and go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, because their wickedness has come up before me. But Jonah got up to run to Tarshish, to get away from the Lord. He went down to Joppa, found a ship headed for Tarshish, paid his fare and got aboard — off to Tarshish, away from the Lord. But the Lord let loose a great wind on the sea. The storm was so heavy the ship looked like breaking up. The crew were frightened, and every man sang out to his own god. They threw the cargo overboard to lighten her. And Jonah? He'd gone below, stretched out, and was sound asleep. The skipper came down to him. What are you doing asleep? Get up and call on your God. He might spare us a thought, and we won't go under. Then they said to each other, Come on — we'll draw lots and find out who's brought this on us. So they drew lots, and it fell on Jonah. So they said to him, Tell us then. Who's brought this on us? What's your line of work? Where have you come from? What country, what people? He said, I'm a Hebrew. And I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land. That put the wind right up them. What have you done? they said — because he'd told them he was running from the Lord. They said, What do we do with you, to get the sea to settle? Because it was getting worse by the minute. He said, Pick me up and throw me over. Then it'll settle for you. I know this storm has come on you because of me. Even so, the men rowed hard to get her back to land. They couldn't. The sea only got wilder against them. So they called out to the Lord: Please, Lord, don't let us go under for this man's life, and don't hold innocent blood against us. You are the Lord, and you have done as you saw fit. Then they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging. And the men were in awe of the Lord. They offered a sacrifice to him and made their vows. Now the Lord had a great fish ready to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

So the captain came to him and said: What's this, you sleeper? Get up and call on your God. Maybe your God will think about us, so we don't go under. And they said to each other: Come on, let's cast lots so we know whose fault this trouble is. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. Then they said to him: Tell us now, whose fault is this trouble we're in? What do you do? And where do you come from? What's your country, and what people are you from? And he said to them: I'm a Hebrew. And I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land. Then the men were badly frightened and said to him: What's this you've done? Because the men knew he was running from the Lord, because he'd told them. Then they said to him: What'll we do to you so the sea goes quiet for us? Because the sea was getting rougher and rougher. And he said to them: Pick me up and throw me into the sea, and the sea will go quiet for you. Because I know it's my fault this big storm is on you. Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not. And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou? And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land. Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous. And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you. Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them. Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee. So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows. Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
Get up and go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, because their wickedness has come up before me.

Then they said to him: Tell us now, whose fault is this trouble we're in? What do you do? And where do you come from? What's your country, and what people are you from?
Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.
Then they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging.
