Nineveh turns
The Lord spoke to Jonah a second time: Get up and go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message I give you. So this time Jonah got up and went to Nineveh, as the Lord told him. Nineveh was a huge city — three days to cross it. Jonah started into the city, a day's journey in, and called out: Forty days, and Nineveh will be overthrown. And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called a fast and put on coarse mourning cloth, from the greatest of them to the least. Word reached the king of Nineveh, and he got up off his throne, took off his robe, put coarse mourning cloth on and sat in ashes. And he had it proclaimed through Nineveh, by order of the king and his nobles: Nobody eats. Not man nor beast, herd nor flock. They're not to feed and they're not to drink. Man and beast are to be covered in coarse mourning cloth, and they're to call on God with everything they've got. Every man is to turn from the way he's been going, and from the violence he's had a hand in. Who knows? God might turn round and think better of it, and pull back from his fierce anger, and we won't go under. And God saw what they did — that they turned from their evil way — and God thought better of the harm he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.

Now Nineveh was a very big town, three days' walk across. And Jonah started going into the town one day's walk. And he called out and said: Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned. And the people of Nineveh believed God and called a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least. And word came to the king of Nineveh, and he got up off his throne and took off his robe and covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. And he had it called out and told through Nineveh by order of the king and his nobles: Don't let man or beast, herd or flock, taste a thing. Don't let them feed or drink water. But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them cry out hard to God. Yes, let every man turn from his wicked way and from the violence in his hands. Who knows? God might turn round and be sorry and turn from the heat of his anger, so we don't go under. And God saw what they did, that they turned from their wicked way. And God was sorry about the trouble he'd said he'd do to them, and he didn't do it.
And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying, Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey. And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
