The feast of booths
After this Jesus walked about in Galilee. He wouldn't walk in Jewry, because the Jews were trying to kill him. Now the Jewish Festival of Shelters was near. So his brothers said to him, Leave here and go into Judaea, so your disciples can see the works you do as well. Because nobody does anything in secret if he wants to be known openly. If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world. Because even his brothers didn't believe in him. Then Jesus said to them, My time hasn't come yet. But your time is always ready. The world can't hate you. But it hates me, because I testify about it that what it does is evil. You go up to this feast. I am not going up to this feast yet, because my time isn't fully come. And when he had said this to them, he stayed on in Galilee. But when his brothers had gone up, then he went up to the feast as well — not openly, but as it were in secret. Then the Jews looked for him at the feast and said, Where is he? And there was a lot of muttering among the crowd about him. Some said, He is a good man. Others said, No — he leads the people astray. Teaching in the temple
Now about the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught. And the Jews were amazed, saying, How does this man know so much, when he has never studied? Jesus answered them, My teaching isn't mine, but his who sent me. If any man is willing to do his will, he will know about the teaching — whether it is from God, or whether I speak on my own. The man who speaks on his own is after his own glory. But the man who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him. Didn't Moses give you the law? And not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me? The crowd answered, You have a demon. Who is trying to kill you? Jesus answered them, I did one work, and you are all amazed at it. Moses gave you circumcision — not that it comes from Moses, but from the fathers — and you circumcise a man on the sabbath. If a man is circumcised on the sabbath so the law of Moses isn't broken, are you angry at me for making a whole man well on the sabbath? Don't judge by appearances. Judge with right judgement. Then some of the people of Jerusalem said, Isn't this the man they are trying to kill? And look — he is speaking openly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers really worked out that this is the Christ? But we know where this man is from. And when the Christ comes, nobody will know where he is from. Then Jesus cried out in the temple as he taught, saying, You both know me and know where I am from. And I haven't come on my own. But the one who sent me is true, and you don't know him. But I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me. Then they tried to seize him. But nobody laid a hand on him, because his hour hadn't come yet. And many of the crowd believed in him and said, When the Christ comes, will he do more signs than this man has done? The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him. And the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to arrest him. Then Jesus said to them, I am with you a little while longer, and then I go to the one who sent me. You will look for me and won't find me. And where I am, you can't come. Then the Jews said among themselves, Where is he going, that we won't find him? Is he going to those scattered among the Gentiles, to teach the Gentiles? What does he mean by this saying, You will look for me and won't find me, and where I am you can't come?

Didn't Moses give you the law? And not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?

The crowd answered, You have a demon. Who is trying to kill you?

Rivers of living water
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If any man is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the scripture has said, out of him will flow rivers of living water. But he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive. Because the Holy Spirit hadn't been given yet, since Jesus wasn't yet glorified. So many of the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, This really is the Prophet. Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Is the Christ going to come out of Galilee? Hasn't the scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and out of Bethlehem, the town where David was? So there was a division among the crowd because of him. And some of them wanted to seize him. But nobody laid a hand on him. Then the officers came back to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, Why haven't you brought him? The officers answered, No man ever spoke like this man.
