Five thousand fed
After this Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. And a great crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he did on those who were sick. And Jesus went up on a mountain, and sat there with his disciples. And the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. So when Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming to him, he said to Philip, Where can we buy bread for these people to eat? And he said this to test him, because he knew himself what he was going to do. Philip answered him, Two hundred denarii — roughly six months' wages — wouldn't buy enough bread for everyone to have even a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, There is a boy here with five barley loaves and two small fish. But what are they among so many? And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was plenty of grass in that place. So the men sat down, about five thousand of them. And Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks he handed them out to those sitting down. And he did the same with the fish, as much as they wanted. And when they had had enough, he said to his disciples, Gather up the pieces left over, so nothing is wasted. So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. Then when those men saw the sign Jesus did, they said, This really is the Prophet who is to come into the world. So when Jesus knew they meant to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to a mountain by himself, alone.

When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.

Walking on the sea
And when evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, and got into a boat and started across the sea toward Capernaum. And it was dark by then, and Jesus hadn't come to them. And the sea got up, because a strong wind was blowing. So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat. And they were afraid. But he said to them, It is I. Don't be afraid. Then they were glad to take him into the boat. And straight away the boat was at the land they were heading for.
And when evening had come, his disciples went down to the sea. And got into a boat and went over the sea towards Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus hadn't come to them. And the sea got up because a great wind blew. So when they'd rowed about twenty-five or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat. And they were frightened. But he says to them: It's me. Don't be frightened. Then they willingly took him into the boat. And straight away the boat was at the land they were going to.
And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea, And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them. And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew. So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid. Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

The bread of life
The next day the crowd standing on the other side of the sea saw that there had been no other boat there except the one his disciples had got into, and that Jesus hadn't gone into the boat with them, but his disciples had gone off alone. Though other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. So when the crowd saw that Jesus wasn't there, or his disciples, they got into the boats themselves and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. And when they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when did you get here? Jesus answered them, I tell you the truth, you are looking for me not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Don't work for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts to everlasting life, which the Son of man will give you. Because God the Father has set his seal on him. Then they said to him, What must we do, to work the works of God? Jesus answered them, This is the work of God: that you believe in the one he sent. So they said to him, What sign will you show us then, so we can see and believe you? What work will you do? Our fathers ate manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said to them, I tell you the truth, Moses didn't give you that bread from heaven. My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. Because the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Then they said to him, Lord, give us this bread always. And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But I said to you that you have seen me and still don't believe. Everyone the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never turn away. Because I came down from heaven not to do my own will, but the will of the one who sent me. And this is the will of the one who sent me: that of all he has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. And this is the will of the one who sent me: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him should have everlasting life. And I will raise him up at the last day. Then the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, I am the bread that came down from heaven. And they said, Isn't this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that he says, I came down from heaven? So Jesus answered them, Stop grumbling among yourselves. Nobody can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they will all be taught by God. So everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the one who is from God. He has seen the Father. I tell you the truth, whoever believes in me has everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness, and they are dead. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so a man may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If any man eats of this bread he will live forever. And the bread I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. It is the Spirit who gives life. The flesh counts for nothing. The words I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. But there are some of you who don't believe. Because Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who didn't believe, and who would betray him. And he said, This is why I told you that nobody can come to me unless it has been given him by my Father. From that time many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the twelve, Do you want to go away as well? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, who would we go to? You have the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that you are that Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus answered them, Haven't I chosen you twelve? And one of you is a devil. He was speaking of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. Because it was he who would betray him, being one of the twelve.
