The pool of Bethesda

After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem, by the sheep gate, a pool called in Hebrew Bethesda, with five covered porches. In these lay a great crowd of sick people — blind, lame and paralysed — waiting for the water to be stirred. Because an angel went down into the pool at a certain time and stirred the water. And whoever stepped in first after the water was stirred was made well of whatever disease he had. And a certain man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew he had been in that state a long time, he said to him, Do you want to be made well? The sick man answered him, Sir, I have nobody to put me into the pool when the water is stirred. And while I am coming, somebody else steps down before me. Jesus said to him, Get up. Pick up your mat and walk. And straight away the man was made well, and he picked up his mat and walked. And that day was the sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, It is the sabbath. It isn't lawful for you to carry your mat. He answered them, The man who made me well said to me, Pick up your mat and walk. Then they asked him, Who is the man who said to you, Pick up your mat and walk? And the man who had been healed didn't know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away, since there was a crowd in that place. Afterwards Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, Look — you have been made well. Stop sinning, in case something worse happens to you. The man went away and told the Jews it was Jesus who had made him well. And this is why the Jews persecuted Jesus and tried to kill him: because he did these things on the sabbath.

After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there's at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, that has five porches. In these lay a great crowd of sick people, blind, lame, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. Because an angel went down at a certain season into the pool and troubled the water. Then whoever stepped in first after the troubling of the water was made whole of whatever disease he had. And a certain man was there who'd had a trouble thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying and knew he'd been like that a long time now, he says to him: Do you want to be made whole? The sick man answered him: Sir, I've got no man to put me into the pool when the water is troubled. But while I'm coming, another steps down in front of me. Jesus says to him: Get up, take up your bed and walk. And straight away the man was made whole and took up his bed and walked. And the same day was the sabbath. So the Jews said to the one who was cured: It's the sabbath day. It isn't lawful for you to carry your bed. He answered them: The one who made me whole said to me: Take up your bed and walk. Then they asked him: What man is it who said to you: Take up your bed and walk? And the one who was healed didn't know who it was. Because Jesus had slipped away, a crowd being in that place. Afterwards Jesus finds him in the temple and said to him: Look — you're made whole. Don't sin any more, in case something worse comes to you. The man went off and told the Jews it was Jesus who'd made him whole. And that's why the Jews chased Jesus and looked to kill him, because he'd done these things on the sabbath day.

After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place. Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee. The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole. And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

The Son and the Father

But Jesus answered them, My Father is working right up to now, and I am working. So the Jews tried all the harder to kill him, because he had not only broken the sabbath but had said that God was his own Father, making himself equal with God. Then Jesus answered them, I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing of himself, only what he sees the Father doing. Because whatever the Father does, the Son does the same. Because the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he does. And he will show him greater works than these, so you will be amazed. Because just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son gives life to whoever he wants. Because the Father judges nobody, but has handed all judgement over to the Son, so that everyone should honour the Son just as they honour the Father. Whoever doesn't honour the Son doesn't honour the Father who sent him. I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes the one who sent me has everlasting life. He won't come into condemnation, but has passed from death into life. I tell you the truth, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. Because just as the Father has life in himself, so he has given the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to carry out judgement as well, because he is the Son of man. Don't be amazed at this. Because the hour is coming when everyone in the graves will hear his voice and will come out — those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. I can do nothing of myself. As I hear, I judge. And my judgement is just, because I don't seek my own will but the will of the Father who sent me.

But Jesus answered them: My Father works right up till now, and I work. That's why the Jews looked all the more to kill him, because he hadn't only broken the sabbath but said too that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. Then Jesus answered them: Truly, truly I say to you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father do. Because whatever things he does, the Son does the same too. Because the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he does. And he'll show him greater works than these, so you can be shocked. Because the way the Father raises up the dead and makes them alive, that's how the Son makes alive who he wants. Because the Father judges no man, but has given all judgment to the Son — so all men can honour the Son the way they honour the Father. The one who doesn't honour the Son doesn't honour the Father who sent him. Truly, truly I say to you, the one who hears my word and believes on the one who sent me has everlasting life, and won't come into condemning, but has gone from death to life. Truly, truly I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God. And the ones who hear will live. Because the way the Father has life in himself, that's how he's given the Son to have life in himself. And has given him authority to carry out judgment too, because he's the Son of Man. Don't be shocked at this. Because the hour is coming when everyone in the graves will hear his voice, and will come out — the ones who've done good to the resurrection of life, and the ones who've done evil to the resurrection of condemning. I can do nothing of myself. As I hear, I judge. And my judgment is just, because I don't look for my own will but the will of the Father who sent me.

But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

Plain English

Because the way the Father raises up the dead and makes them alive, that's how the Son makes alive who he wants.

so all men can honour the Son the way they honour the Father. The one who doesn't honour the Son doesn't honour the Father who sent him.

King James Version, 1611

and will come out — the ones who've done good to the resurrection of life, and the ones who've done evil to the resurrection of condemning.

King James Version, 1611

And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

King James Version, 1611

I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

Witnesses to the Son

If I bear witness of myself, my witness isn't true. There is another who bears witness of me, and I know that the witness he bears of me is true. You sent to John, and he bore witness to the truth. But I don't take testimony from man. I say these things so you may be saved. He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. But I have greater witness than John's. Because the works the Father has given me to finish — the very works I do — bear witness of me, that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has borne witness of me himself. You have never heard his voice or seen his form. And you don't have his word living in you, because you don't believe the one he sent. You search the scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life. And they are the very ones that bear witness of me. And you won't come to me, so you could have life. I don't take honour from men. But I know you — that you don't have the love of God in you. I have come in my Father's name and you don't receive me. If another man comes in his own name, you will receive him. How can you believe, when you take honour from one another and don't seek the honour that comes from the only God? Don't think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you — Moses, the one you have set your hope on. Because if you had believed Moses, you would have believed me. Because he wrote about me. But if you don't believe his writings, how will you believe my words?

If I testify about myself, my witness isn't true. There's another who testifies about me, and I know the witness he testifies about me is true. You sent to John, and he testified to the truth. But I don't take witness from man. But I say these things so you can be saved. He was a burning and a shining light. And you were willing for a while to celebrate in his light. But I've got greater witness than John's. Because the works the Father has given me to finish, the same works I do testify about me that the Father has sent me. And the Father himself, who sent me, has testified about me. You've never heard his voice at any time or seen what he looks like. And you haven't got his word staying in you, because you don't believe the one he's sent. Search the scriptures. Because in them you think you've got everlasting life. And they're the ones that testify about me. And you won't come to me so you can have life. I don't take honour from men. But I know you, that you haven't got the love of God in you. I've come in my Father's name, and you don't take me in. If another comes in his own name, you'll take him in. How can you believe, when you take honour from each other and don't look for the honour that comes from God only? Don't think I'll charge you to the Father. There's one who charges you, Moses, who you trust in. Because if you'd believed Moses, you'd have believed me. Because he wrote about me. But if you don't believe his writings, how will you believe my words?

If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. I receive not honour from men. But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

If I bear witness of myself, my witness isn't true.

Plain English

Plain English

King James Version, 1611

But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

35

He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

Plain English

He was a burning and a shining light. And you were willing for a while to celebrate in his light.

King James Version, 1611

He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

36

But I have greater witness than John's. Because the works the Father has given me to finish — the very works I do — bear witness of me, that the Father has sent me.

Plain English

But I've got greater witness than John's. Because the works the Father has given me to finish, the same works I do testify about me that the Father has sent me.

King James Version, 1611

But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

37

And the Father who sent me has borne witness of me himself. You have never heard his voice or seen his form.

Plain English

And the Father himself, who sent me, has testified about me. You've never heard his voice at any time or seen what he looks like.

King James Version, 1611

And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

38

And you don't have his word living in you, because you don't believe the one he sent.

Plain English

And you haven't got his word staying in you, because you don't believe the one he's sent.

King James Version, 1611

And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

39

You search the scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life. And they are the very ones that bear witness of me.

Plain English

Search the scriptures. Because in them you think you've got everlasting life. And they're the ones that testify about me.

King James Version, 1611

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

40

And you won't come to me, so you could have life.

Plain English

And you won't come to me so you can have life.

King James Version, 1611

And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

41

I don't take honour from men.

King James Version, 1611

I receive not honour from men.

42
