The work of the Comforter
I have told you these things so you won't fall away. They will put you out of the synagogues. In fact the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is serving God. And they will do these things to you because they haven't known the Father or me. But I have told you these things so that when the time comes you will remember I told you about them. And I didn't tell you these things at the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to the one who sent me, and none of you asks me, Where are you going? But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Even so, I tell you the truth: it is better for you that I go away. Because if I don't go away, the Comforter won't come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world about sin and about righteousness and about judgement — about sin, because they don't believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to my Father and you won't see me any more; and about judgement, because the prince of this world is judged. I have many more things to say to you, but you can't bear them now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you into all truth. Because he won't speak on his own, but whatever he hears he will speak. And he will show you things to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and show it to you. Everything the Father has is mine. That is why I said he will take what is mine and show it to you.
I've spoken these things to you, so you won't be put off. They'll put you out of the meeting houses. Yes, the time is coming when whoever kills you will think he's doing God a service. And they'll do these things to you because they haven't known the Father or me. But I've told you these things, so when the time comes you can remember I told you about them. And I didn't say these things to you at the start, because I was with you. But now I go my way to the one who sent me. And none of you asks me: Where do you go? But whatever he'll hear, that's what he'll speak. And he'll show you things to come. He'll glorify me. Because he'll take of mine and will show it to you. Everything the Father has is mine. That's why I said he'll take of mine and will show it to you.

I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

I have many more things to say to you, but you can't bear them now.

But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you into all truth. Because he won't speak on his own, but whatever he hears he will speak. And he will show you things to come.

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and show it to you.

Sorrow turned to joy
A little while, and you won't see me. And again a little while, and you will see me, because I am going to the Father. Then some of his disciples said among themselves, What is this he is telling us — A little while, and you won't see me, and again a little while, and you will see me? And, Because I am going to the Father? So they said, What is this A little while he is talking about? We don't know what he means. Now Jesus knew they wanted to ask him, and he said to them, Are you asking one another what I meant by saying, A little while and you won't see me, and again a little while and you will see me? I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice. And you will be full of sorrow, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. A woman in labour has sorrow, because her hour has come. But as soon as she has given birth to the child, she doesn't remember the anguish any more, for joy that a child has been born into the world. And so you have sorrow now. But I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and nobody will take your joy from you. And on that day you won't ask me anything. I tell you the truth, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, so your joy may be full. I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. But the time is coming when I won't speak to you in figures any more, but will tell you plainly about the Father. On that day you will ask in my name. And I am not saying I will ask the Father for you, because the Father himself loves you, since you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father. His disciples said to him, Look, now you are speaking plainly and not in figures. Now we are sure that you know everything, and don't need anyone to question you. By this we believe you came from God. Jesus answered them, Do you believe now? Look, the hour is coming — in fact it has come — when you will be scattered, every man to his own, and you will leave me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have trouble. But take heart — I have overcome the world.

Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. because the Father himself loves you, since you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.

His disciples said to him, Look, now you are speaking plainly and not in figures.

Now we are sure that you know everything, and don't need anyone to question you. By this we believe you came from God.

Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
Jesus answered them, Do you believe now?

I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have trouble. But take heart — I have overcome the world.
