Why this great wickedness?
The word that came to Jeremiah about all the Jews living in the land of Egypt — living at Migdol and at Tahpanhes and at Noph and in the land of Pathros: This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says. You've seen all the trouble I brought on Jerusalem and on all the cities of Judah. And look at them today — a desolation, with nobody living in them — Because of the wickedness they did to make me angry, going off to burn incense and serve other gods they didn't know, they or you or your fathers. And I'll take the survivors of Judah who set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to live there, and they'll all be consumed in the land of Egypt. They'll fall by the sword and famine. From the least to the greatest they'll die by sword and famine, and they'll be a curse and a horror and something people insult and hiss at. And I'll deal with those living in the land of Egypt the way I dealt with Jerusalem — by the sword and famine and plague — So that nobody of the survivors of Judah who've gone into the land of Egypt to live will escape or be left to return to the land of Judah, the land they're longing to return to and live in. Because they won't come back, except a few who escape.

And I will take the remnant of Judah, that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, and they shall all be consumed, and fall in the land of Egypt; they shall even be consumed by the sword and by the famine: they shall die, from the least even unto the greatest, by the sword and by the famine: and they shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach. For I will punish them that dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: So that none of the remnant of Judah, which are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall escape or remain, that they should return into the land of Judah, to the which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return but such as shall escape.

Then all the men who knew their wives were burning incense to other gods, and all the women standing there, a big crowd, and all the people living in the land of Egypt at Pathros, answered Jeremiah: As for the word you've spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we're not listening to you. But we'll definitely do everything that's come out of our own mouth — to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her, the way we did, us and our fathers, our kings and our officials, in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem. Because then we had plenty of food, were doing well and saw no trouble. But since we left off burning incense to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we've had nothing, and we've been consumed by sword and famine. And when we burnt incense to the queen of heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, was it without our husbands that we made cakes to look like her and poured out drink offerings to her? Then Jeremiah spoke to all the people — to the men and the women and all the people who'd answered him back: The incense you burnt in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your officials and the people of the land — didn't the LORD remember it? Didn't it come into his mind? And the LORD couldn't bear it any more, because of the wickedness of what you did and the disgusting things you did. So your land is a desolation and a horror and a curse, with nobody living in it, the way it is today. Because you burnt incense and sinned against the LORD and didn't listen to the voice of the LORD or walk in his teaching and his rules and his instructions, this trouble has come on you the way it has today. And Jeremiah said to all the people and to all the women: Listen to the word of the LORD, all Judah in the land of Egypt. This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You and your wives have spoken with your mouths and carried it out with your hands, saying, We'll definitely do the vows we've vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her. Go on then — keep your vows and do them. So listen to the word of the LORD, all Judah living in the land of Egypt. Look: I've sworn by my great name, says the LORD, that my name won't be spoken again in the mouth of any man of Judah in the whole land of Egypt, saying, As surely as the LORD GOD lives. Look: I'm watching over them for trouble and not for good. And every man of Judah in the land of Egypt will be consumed by sword and famine, till they're all gone. And the few who escape from the sword will come back out of the land of Egypt to the land of Judah. And all the survivors of Judah who went into the land of Egypt to live there will know whose word stands — mine or theirs. And this is the sign for you, declares the LORD, that I'll deal with you in this place — so you know my words against you will definitely stand for trouble. This is what the LORD says: Look: I'll hand over Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt to his enemies and to those after his life, the way I handed over Zedekiah king of Judah to Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, his enemy who was after his life.

And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men? Then Jeremiah said unto all the people, to the men, and to the women, and to all the people which had given him that answer, saying, The incense that ye burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye, and your fathers, your kings, and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the LORD remember them, and came it not into his mind? So that the LORD could no longer bear, because of the evil of your doings, and because of the abominations which ye have committed; therefore is your land a desolation, and an astonishment, and a curse, without an inhabitant, as at this day. Because ye have burned incense, and because ye have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies; therefore this evil is happened unto you, as at this day. Moreover Jeremiah said unto all the people, and to all the women, Hear the word of the LORD, all Judah that are in the land of Egypt: Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying; Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hand, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her: ye will surely accomplish your vows, and surely perform your vows. Therefore hear ye the word of the LORD, all Judah that dwell in the land of Egypt; Behold, I have sworn by my great name, saith the LORD, that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, The Lord GOD liveth. Behold, I will watch over them for evil, and not for good: and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there be an end of them. Yet a small number that escape the sword shall return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah, and all the remnant of Judah, that are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall know whose words shall stand, mine, or theirs. And this shall be a sign unto you, saith the LORD, that I will punish you in this place, that ye may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil: Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give Pharaohhophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of them that seek his life; as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, his enemy, and that sought his life.

Moreover Jeremiah said unto all the people, and to all the women, Hear the word of the LORD, all Judah that are in the land of Egypt:
This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You and your wives have spoken with your mouths and carried it out with your hands, saying, We'll definitely do the vows we've vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her. Go on then — keep your vows and do them.

Look: I'm watching over them for trouble and not for good. And every man of Judah in the land of Egypt will be consumed by sword and famine, till they're all gone.

And the few who escape from the sword will come back out of the land of Egypt to the land of Judah. And all the survivors of Judah who went into the land of Egypt to live there will know whose word stands — mine or theirs.

And this is the sign for you, declares the LORD, that I'll deal with you in this place — so you know my words against you will definitely stand for trouble.

This is what the LORD says: Look: I'll hand over Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt to his enemies and to those after his life, the way I handed over Zedekiah king of Judah to Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, his enemy who was after his life.
