Now Jeremiah was coming and going among the people, because they hadn't put him in prison yet. And Pharaoh's army had come out of Egypt. And when the Chaldeans besieging Jerusalem heard the news about them, they pulled back off Jerusalem. Then the LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet: This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says. This is what you'll tell the king of Judah who sent you to ask me: Look: Pharaoh's army that came out to help you will go back to Egypt, to their own land. And when he was at the Benjamin Gate, the captain of the guard was there, a man named Irijah son of Shelemiah son of Hananiah. And he grabbed Jeremiah the prophet: You're deserting to the Chaldeans. And Jeremiah said: That's a lie. I'm not deserting to the Chaldeans. But he wouldn't listen to him. So Irijah grabbed Jeremiah and brought him to the officials. And the officials were angry with Jeremiah and beat him and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe, because they'd made that the lock-up. So Jeremiah went into the pit house, into the cells, and Jeremiah stayed there a long time. Then King Zedekiah sent and got him out. And the king asked him quietly in his house: Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah said: There is. And he said: You'll be handed over to the king of Babylon. And Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah: What have I done wrong against you or your servants or this people, that you've put me in prison? Where are your prophets now, those who prophesied to you and said, The king of Babylon won't come against you or against this land? So listen now, my lord the king. Let my pleading come before you, please, and don't send me back to the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I'll die there. And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans. Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes. Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison. When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days; Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon. Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there. Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
