The Rekabites refuse the wine
The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: “Go to the house of the Rechabites and speak to them. Bring them into the house of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.” So I took Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah son of Habaziniah, and his brothers and all his sons and the whole house of the Rechabites, And I brought them into the house of the LORD, into the room of the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah the man of God, which is next to the room of the officials, above the room of Maaseiah son of Shallum the doorkeeper. And I set jugs full of wine and cups before the sons of the house of the Rechabites and said to them: Drink some wine. But they said, “We will drink no wine, because Jonadab son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, ‘You will drink no wine, neither you nor your sons, forever. And don't build a house or sow seed or plant a vineyard or have one. You'll live in tents all your days, so you live a long time on the face of the land where you're travelling. And we've listened to the voice of Jonadab son of Rechab our father in everything he ordered us, not to drink wine all our days — us and our wives, our sons and our daughters — And not to build houses to live in. And we have no vineyard or field or seed. We've lived in tents and listened and done everything Jonadab our father ordered us. But when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, we said, “Come, let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans and the army of the Syrians.” So we live at Jerusalem.

But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, we said: Come on, let's get into Jerusalem away from the Chaldean army and the Aramean army. So we're living in Jerusalem.

But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever: Neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers. Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters; Nor to build houses for us to dwell in: neither have we vineyard, nor field, nor seed: But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us. Then the LORD spoke to Jeremiah: This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says. Go and tell the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem: Won't you take correction and listen to my words? declares the LORD. The words of Jonadab son of Rechab, who ordered his sons not to drink wine, are carried out — they don't drink to this day, because they've listened to their father's order. And I've spoken to you, getting up early and speaking, and you haven't listened to me. And I've sent you all my servants the prophets, getting up early and sending them, saying: Turn back now, each man from his wicked way, and fix up your doings, and don't go after other gods to serve them, and you'll stay on the land I gave you and your fathers. But you haven't turned your ear or listened to me. Because the sons of Jonadab son of Rechab have carried out their father's order that he gave them, and this people hasn't listened to me — So this is what the LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Look, I'm bringing on Judah and on everyone living in Jerusalem all the trouble I've spoken against them. Because I spoke to them and they didn't listen, and I called them and they didn't answer. And Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites: This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says. Because you've listened to the order of Jonadab your father and kept all his orders and done everything he ordered you — So this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Jonadab son of Rechab won't be short of a man to stand before me forever.

The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed; for unto this day they drink none, but obey their father’s commandment: notwithstanding I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye hearkened not unto me. I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Return ye now every man from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto me. Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath not hearkened unto me: Therefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them: because I have spoken unto them, but they have not heard; and I have called unto them, but they have not answered. And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you: Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.
