The field at Anathoth
The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar. At that time the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the guard, in the house of the king of Judah. Because Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying: Why are you prophesying and saying, This is what the LORD says — Look, I'm handing this city over to the king of Babylon and he'll take it, And Zedekiah king of Judah won't escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans. He'll be thoroughly handed over to the king of Babylon, and he'll speak to him mouth to mouth and see him eye to eye. And he'll take Zedekiah to Babylon, and he'll be there until I deal with him, declares the LORD. Though you fight the Chaldeans, you won't do well? And Jeremiah said: The LORD spoke to me: Look: Hanameel son of Shallum your uncle is coming to you to say: Buy my field at Anathoth, because you have the right of redemption to buy it. So Hanameel my uncle's son came to me in the court of the guard, the way the LORD said, and told me: Buy my field at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, because the right of inheritance is yours and the redemption is yours. Buy it for yourself. Then I knew this was the word of the LORD. So I bought the field at Anathoth from Hanameel my uncle's son, and weighed him out the silver — seventeen shekels of silver. And I signed the deed and sealed it and got witnesses, and weighed the silver out on the scales. Then I took the deed of purchase, both the sealed one with the terms and conditions and the open one, And I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Neriah son of Maaseiah, before Hanameel my uncle's son and before the witnesses who'd signed the deed of purchase, before all the Jews sitting in the court of the guard. And I ordered Baruch before them: This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says. Take these deeds — this deed of purchase, both the sealed one and this open one — and put them in a clay jar so they last a long time. Because this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses and fields and vineyards will be bought again in this land.

And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances. So I took the evidence of the purchase, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open: And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel mine uncle’s son, and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison. And I charged Baruch before them, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Take these evidences, this evidence of the purchase, both which is sealed, and this evidence which is open; and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may continue many days. For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land.

And after I'd given the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Neriah, I prayed to the LORD: Ah, Lord GOD! You have made heaven and earth by your great power and your outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for you. You do faithful love to thousands and pay back the wrongdoing of the fathers into the laps of their children after them. The great, the mighty God — the LORD Almighty is his name. Great in counsel and mighty in work. Your eyes are open on all the ways of the people, to give every man according to his ways and according to the fruit of what he does. You set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt right up to today, and in Israel and among other people, and you made yourself a name the way it is today. And you brought your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs and wonders and a strong hand and an outstretched arm and great terror. And you gave them this land, which you swore to their fathers to give them — a land flowing with milk and honey. And they came in and took it, and they didn't listen to your voice or walk in your teaching. They didn't do anything you ordered them to do. So you've made all this trouble come on them. Look at the siege ramps — they've come up to the city to take it. And the city is handed over to the Chaldeans fighting against it, because of the sword and the famine and the plague. What you said has happened, and here you are looking at it. And you said to me, Lord GOD: Buy the field with silver and get witnesses — and the city is handed over to the Chaldeans.

And thou hast said unto me, O Lord GOD, Buy thee the field for money, and take witnesses; for the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

So this is what the LORD says: Look: I'm handing this city over to the Chaldeans and to Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he'll take it. And the Chaldeans fighting against this city will come in and set this city on fire and burn it, with the houses where they burnt incense to Baal on the roofs and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to make me angry. Because the people of Israel and the people of Judah have done nothing but what's wrong in my eyes since they were young. Because the people of Israel have done nothing but make me angry with the work of their hands, declares the LORD. Because this city has been to me nothing but my anger and my fury from the day they built it right up to today, so I'd take it away out of my sight — Because of all the wickedness of the people of Israel and the people of Judah that they've done to make me angry, they and their kings and their officials and their priests and their prophets, the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem. They've turned their backs to me and not their faces. And though I taught them, getting up early and teaching, they didn't listen and take correction. They set their disgusting things up in the house that's called by my name, to make it filthy. And they built the worship shrines of Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, to make their sons and their daughters go through to Molech — which I never ordered them and which never came into my mind, that they'd do this disgusting thing and make Judah sin. And now, this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about this city that you say is handed over to the king of Babylon by sword and famine and plague: I will gather them out of all the countries where I have driven them in my anger, my fury and great fury. I will bring them back to this place and cause them to live safely. And they'll be my people, and I'll be their God. And I'll give them one heart and one way, to fear me always, for their own good and their children's after them. I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will not turn away from doing them good, and I will put my fear in their hearts so they will not depart from me. Yes, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly, with my whole heart and my whole soul.” Because this is what the LORD says: The way I've brought all this great trouble on this people, that's how I'll bring on them all the good I've promised them. And fields will be bought in this land that you say is a desolation with no man and no beast, handed over to the Chaldeans. People will buy fields for money, sign deeds, seal them and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, in the places around Jerusalem, in the cities of Judah, in the cities of the mountains, the valley and the south. For I will cause their captivity to return, says the LORD.

Men will buy fields with silver and sign deeds and seal them and get witnesses, in the land of Benjamin and in the places round Jerusalem and in the towns of Judah, in the towns of the hill country and the towns of the lowland and the towns of the Negev. Because I'll bring them back from where they've been taken, declares the Lord.

Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it: And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger. For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith the LORD. For this city hath been to me as a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face, Because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face: though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction. But they set their abominations in the house, which is called by my name, to defile it. And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin. And now therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence; Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely: And they shall be my people, and I will be their God: And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me. Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul. For thus saith the LORD; Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them. And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say, It is desolate without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans. Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe evidences, and seal them, and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the south: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.

So this is what the LORD says: Look: I'm handing this city over to the Chaldeans and to Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he'll take it.

And the Chaldeans fighting against this city will come in and set this city on fire and burn it, with the houses where they burnt incense to Baal on the roofs and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to make me angry.
