An everlasting love

At that time, declares the LORD, I'll be the God of all the families of Israel, and they'll be my people. This is what the LORD says: The people who survived the sword found kindness in the wilderness — Israel, when I went to give him rest. The LORD appeared to me of old, saying, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; so with faithful love I have drawn you. I'll build you again and you'll be built, virgin of Israel. You'll pick up your tambourines again and go out dancing with those celebrating. You'll plant vineyards again on the hills of Samaria. Those who plant will plant and eat the fruit themselves. Because there'll be a day when the watchmen cry out on Mount Ephraim: Rise and let's go up to Zion, to the LORD our God. Because this is what the LORD says: Sing out with gladness for Jacob and shout for the head of the nations. Let it be heard, sing praise and say: Lord, save your people, the survivors of Israel. Look: I'll bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the far parts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the pregnant woman and the one in labour together. They'll come back here in a great crowd. They'll come weeping, and I'll lead them along while they plead. I'll take them along streams of water on a straight road where they won't stumble. Because I'm a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. Listen to the word of the LORD, you nations, and tell it in the coastlands far off. Say: The one who scattered Israel will gather him and keep him the way a shepherd keeps his flock. Because the LORD has bought Jacob back and paid the ransom for him out of the hand of the one who was too strong for him. So they'll come and sing on the height of Zion and stream to the goodness of the LORD — to the grain and the new wine and the oil, and the young of the flock and the herd. And their soul will be like a watered garden, and they won't be sad any more. Then the young woman will rejoice with dancing, young men and old together. And I'll turn their mourning into gladness. I'll comfort them and make them glad instead of sad. And I'll fill up the soul of the priests with abundance, and my people will be filled with my goodness, declares the LORD.

Look — I'll bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the far parts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the pregnant woman and the one in labour together. Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow. And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the LORD.

Rachel weeping

This is what the LORD says: “A voice was heard in Ramah — wailing and bitter weeping. Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.” This is what the LORD says: “Hold back your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, because your work will be rewarded,” says the LORD. “They will come again from the land of the enemy. And there's hope for your future, declares the LORD, and your children will return to their own border. I've really heard Ephraim moaning to himself: You've set me straight and I was set straight, like a calf that hasn't been broken in. Turn me back and I'll turn back, because you're the LORD my God. After I turned back, I was sorry. After I understood, I struck my thigh. I was ashamed and humiliated, because I carried the disgrace of my youth. Isn't Ephraim my dear son, my delightful child? Because whenever I speak against him, I still remember him. So my insides ache for him. I'll thoroughly have mercy on him, declares the LORD. Set up signposts for yourself and put up markers. Set your heart towards the highway, the road you went out on. Come back, virgin of Israel — return to these cities of yours. How long will you wander about, backsliding daughter? The LORD has created a new thing in the earth: a woman will compass a man. This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: They'll say this word again in the land of Judah and in its cities, when I bring them back from where they've been taken: May the LORD bless you, home of righteousness, mountain of holiness. And Judah and all its cities will live there together — farmers and those who go about with the flocks. Because I've filled up the weary soul and topped up every soul that was sad. At this I woke up and looked, and my sleep had been sweet to me.

Set your heart towards the highway, the road you went out on. Come back, virgin of Israel — come back to these towns of yours. How long will you go wandering, you turning-away daughter? A new covenant

Look: the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I'll sow the people of Israel and the people of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast. And the way I watched over them to pull up and pull down and overturn and destroy and bring trouble, that's how I'll watch over them to build and to plant, declares the LORD. In those days they won't say any more: The fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge. Every man will die for his own wrongdoing. Whoever eats the sour grapes, his own teeth will be set on edge. “The days are coming,” says the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to bring them out of Egypt — a covenant they broke, although I was a husband to them,” says the LORD. “This will be the covenant I make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the LORD. “I will put my law within them and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. They will no longer teach every person their neighbour and every person their brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” says the LORD. “For I will forgive their wrongdoing, and I will remember their sin no more.” This is what the LORD says — who gives the sun for light by day and appoints the moon and stars for light by night; who stirs up the sea so its waves roar. The LORD Almighty is his name. If those fixed things ever go from before me, declares the LORD, then the offspring of Israel will stop being a nation before me forever. This is what the LORD says: If the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth searched out below, then I'll reject the whole offspring of Israel for everything they've done, declares the LORD. Look: the days are coming, declares the LORD, when the city will be built for the LORD from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate. And the measuring line will go straight out from there over the hill of Gareb and turn towards Goah. And the whole valley of the dead bodies and the ashes, and all the fields as far as the Kidron gully, to the corner of the Horse Gate towards the east, will be holy to the LORD. It won't be pulled up or pulled down ever again.

Look — the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I'll sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast. And the way I watched over them to pull up and pull down and overturn and wreck and bring trouble, that's how I'll watch over them to build and to plant, declares the Lord. In those days they won't say any more: The fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge. Every man will die for his own wrongdoing. Whoever eats the sour grapes, his own teeth will be set on edge. Look — the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I'll cut a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. Not like the covenant I cut with their fathers on the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt — the covenant of mine that they broke, though I was a husband to them, declares the Lord. But this is the covenant I'll cut with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I'll put my teaching inside them and write it on their heart. And I'll be their God and they'll be my people. And they won't teach each other any more, each man his neighbour and each man his brother, saying, Know the Lord. Because they'll all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. Because I'll forgive their wrongdoing and won't remember their sin any more. This is what the Lord says — the one who gives the sun for light by day and sets the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so its waves roar. The Lord Almighty is his name. If those fixed things ever go from in front of me, declares the Lord, then the offspring of Israel will stop being a nation in front of me forever. This is what the Lord says: If the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth searched out below, then I'll knock back the whole offspring of Israel for everything they've done, declares the Lord. Look — the days are coming, declares the Lord, when the town will be built for the Lord from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate.

Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of beast. And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the LORD. In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children’s teeth are set on edge. But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge. Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name: If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD. Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the city shall be built to the LORD from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner. And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath. And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy unto the LORD; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.
