Twenty-three years
The word that came to Jeremiah about all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, which was the first year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon. They said: Turn back now, each man from his wicked way and from the wickedness of your doings, and stay on the land the LORD gave you and your fathers forever and ever. And don't go after other gods to serve them and bow down to them, and don't make me angry with what your hands have made — and I won't do you any harm. But you haven't listened to me, declares the LORD, so you've made me angry with what your hands have made, to your own harm. So this is what the LORD Almighty says: Because you haven't listened to my words, Look: I'll send and take all the families of the north, declares the LORD, and Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon my servant, and I'll bring them against this land and against the people living in it and against all these nations round about. I'll set them apart for destruction and make them a horror and something people hiss at, a desolation forever. And I'll take from them the sound of joy and gladness, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. And the whole of this land will be a desolation and a horror, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon for seventy years. And when seventy years are finished, I'll deal with the king of Babylon and that nation, declares the LORD, for their wrongdoing — and with the land of the Chaldeans — and I'll make it a desolation forever. And I'll bring on that land all my words that I've spoken against it, everything written in this book, everything Jeremiah has prophesied against all the nations. Because many nations and great kings will make servants of them too, and I'll pay them back according to what they've done and the work of their hands.

Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Because ye have not heard my words, Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the LORD, and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these nations round about, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and an hissing, and perpetual desolations. Moreover I will take from them the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the candle. And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the LORD, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations. And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah hath prophesied against all the nations. For many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of them also: and I will recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the works of their own hands.

So I took the cup out of the LORD's hand and made all the nations he sent me to drink it — Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, and its kings and its officials, to make them a desolation and a horror, something people hiss at and curse, the way it is today; Pharaoh king of Egypt and his servants and his officials and all his people; And all the mixed crowd, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines — Ashkelon and Gaza and Ekron and the survivors of Ashdod; Edom and Moab and the Ammonites; And all the kings of Tyrus and all the kings of Zidon and the kings of the coastlands across the sea; Dedan and Tema and Buz and everyone with the corners of their hair shaved; And all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the mixed crowd living in the wilderness; And all the kings of Zimri and all the kings of Elam and all the kings of the Medes; All the kings of the north, near and far, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth will drink after them. So prophesy all these words against them and tell them: The LORD will roar from on high and let his voice go from his holy dwelling. He'll roar hard over his fold. He'll give a shout like the men treading the grapes, against everyone living on the earth. The noise will go out to the ends of the earth, because the LORD has a case against the nations. He'll bring judgment on all flesh. As for the wicked, he'll hand them over to the sword, declares the LORD. This is what the LORD Almighty says: Look: trouble is going out from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind is stirred up from the far parts of the earth. And on that day those killed by the LORD will be from one end of the earth to the other. They won't be grieved over or gathered or buried. They'll be dung on the face of the ground. Howl, you shepherds, and cry out. Roll in the ashes, you leaders of the flock. Because your days for the slaughter are up, and I'll break you, and you'll fall like a good pot. And the pastors won't have anywhere to run, and the leaders of the flock won't escape. Listen — the cry of the pastors and the howling of the leaders of the flock, because the LORD is destroying their pasture. And the peaceful folds are cut down because of the fierce anger of the LORD. He's left his cover like a lion, because their land is a horror, from the heat of the oppressor and from the heat of his anger.

Howl, ye shepherds, and cry; and wallow yourselves in the ashes, ye principal of the flock: for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished; and ye shall fall like a pleasant vessel. And the shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the principal of the flock to escape. A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and an howling of the principal of the flock, shall be heard: for the LORD hath spoiled their pasture. And the peaceable habitations are cut down because of the fierce anger of the LORD. He hath forsaken his covert, as the lion: for their land is desolate because of the fierceness of the oppressor, and because of his fierce anger.
