The smashed jar
This is what the LORD said: Go and get a potter's clay jar, and take some of the elders of the people and the elders of the priests. Go out to the Valley of Ben Hinnom by the entrance of the broken piece of pottery Gate, and cry out there the words I tell you. Say: Listen to the word of the LORD, you kings of Judah and people of Jerusalem. This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says. Look: I'm bringing trouble on this place that'll make the ears of everyone who hears it ring. Because they've walked out on me and treated this place as strange and burnt incense in it to other gods, ones they and their fathers and the kings of Judah never knew. And they've filled this place with the blood of the innocent. They've built the worship shrines of Baal to burn their sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal — which I never ordered and never spoke of and which never came into my mind. So look: the days are coming, declares the LORD, when this place won't be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom any more, but the Valley of Slaughter. And I'll pour out the plans of Judah and Jerusalem in this place. I'll make them fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hand of those after their life. And I'll give their bodies as food to the birds of heaven and the animals of the earth. I'll make this city a horror, something people hiss at. Everyone who goes past will be shocked and hiss at all its wounds. I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and everyone will eat the flesh of their friend in the siege and distress with which their enemies and those seeking their lives will distress them. Then break the jar before the men who go with you, And say to them: This is what the LORD Almighty says. That's how I'll break this people and this city, the way someone breaks a potter's pot that can't be mended again. And they'll bury in Topheth till there's no room left to bury. That's what I'll do to this place, declares the LORD, and to the people living in it — make this city like Topheth. And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be as unclean as the place of Topheth — all the houses where they burnt incense on the roofs to the whole host of heaven and poured out drink offerings to other gods.
