And I'll hand the whole of Judah over to the king of Babylon, and he'll carry them off to Babylon and strike them down with the sword. And I'll hand over all the wealth of this city and everything it worked for and everything precious in it, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah I'll hand over to their enemies. They'll take them as plunder and carry them off to Babylon. And you, Pashur, and everyone living in your house will go into captivity. You'll come to Babylon and die there, and you'll be buried there, you and everyone who loves you, those you prophesied lies to.

A burning fire shut up in my bones

LORD, you persuaded me, and I was persuaded. You are stronger than I am, and you prevailed. I am mocked every day; everyone laughs at me. Because whenever I speak, I have to cry out. I cry out violence and ruin, because the word of the LORD has turned into insults and mockery for me all day long. Then I said, “I will not mention him or speak any more in his name.” But his word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones. I was worn out trying to hold it in, and I could not. I heard the defaming of many: “Fear on every side. Report him, and we will report him.” All my close friends watched for me to stumble, saying, “Perhaps he will be enticed, and we will prevail against him and take our revenge on him.” But the LORD is with me like a fearsome warrior. So my persecutors will stumble and won't win. They'll be thoroughly ashamed because they'll get nowhere; their lasting disgrace will never be forgotten. LORD Almighty, you test the righteous and see the mind and the heart. Let me see your vengeance on them, because I've laid out my case before you. Sing to the LORD; praise the LORD, because he has delivered the soul of the poor from the hand of evildoers.

Lord, you talked me into it and I was talked into it. You were stronger than me and you won. I'm a laughing stock all day long. Every one of them makes a joke of me. Because whenever I speak, I have to cry out. I call out violence and ruin, because the word of the Lord has turned into insults and mockery for me all day long. And if I say, I won't mention him or speak in his name any more — then it's in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I'm worn out holding it in and I can't. Because I've heard the whispering of plenty of them — Terror All Round. Report him, they say, and we'll report him. Every man I was at peace with is watching for me to slip: Maybe he'll be talked into it and we'll beat him and get our own back on him. But the Lord is with me like a fearsome strong man. So the ones chasing me will stumble and won't beat me. They'll be well and truly ashamed, because they won't get anywhere. Their shame will be everlasting and never forgotten. Lord Almighty, you test the righteous and see the mind and the heart. Let me see your settling up on them, because I've laid out my case in front of you. Sing to the Lord. Praise the Lord. Because he's got the soul of the poor man out of the hand of the wicked.

O LORD, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived: thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me. For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the LORD was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily. Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay. For I heard the defaming of many, fear on every side. Report, say they, and we will report it. All my familiars watched for my halting, saying, Peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him. But the LORD is with me as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly ashamed; for they shall not prosper: their everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten. But, O LORD of hosts, that triest the righteous, and seest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I opened my cause. Sing unto the LORD, praise ye the LORD: for he hath delivered the soul of the poor from the hand of evildoers.

Cursed be the day

Cursed be the day I was born. Let the day my mother gave birth to me not be blessed. Cursed be the man who brought my father the news and made him very glad, saying: A boy's been born to you. Let that man be like the cities the LORD overturned without being sorry for it. Let him hear a cry in the morning and a war shout at noon, Because he didn't kill me from the womb — so my mother would have been my grave and her womb pregnant forever. Why did I ever come out of the womb to see trouble and grief, and finish my days in shame?
