The potter's house
The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: “Get up and go down to the potter’s house. There I will cause you to hear my words.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, working at his wheel. The vessel he was making from clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, so he made it again into another vessel, as seemed good to the potter. Then the LORD spoke to me: “people of Israel, can’t I do with you as this potter does?” says the LORD. “Look: as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, people of Israel. One moment I speak about a nation or a kingdom, to pull it up and pull it down and destroy it. But if that nation I spoke against turns back from its wickedness, then I'll be sorry about the trouble I planned to do to it. And another moment I speak about a nation or a kingdom, to build it and plant it. But if it does what's wrong in my eyes and doesn't listen to my voice, then I'll be sorry about the good I said I'd do for it. So now, tell the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem: This is what the LORD says. Look: I'm shaping trouble against you and working out a plan against you. Turn back now, each man from his wicked way, and fix up your ways and your doings. But they said: There's no hope. We'll follow our own plans, and every one of us will do what his own stubborn wicked heart wants.

Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good. And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.

They've burnt incense to nothing, and it's made them stumble on their ways, on the old paths, to walk on tracks instead of a made road — To make their land a horror, something people hiss at forever. Everyone who goes past will be shocked and shake his head. I'll scatter them before the enemy like an east wind. I'll show them my back and not my face on the day of their trouble.

So hand their children over to famine and pour them out by the power of the sword. Let their wives be left with no children and widowed. Let their men be killed by death and their young men struck down by the sword in battle. Let a cry be heard from their houses when you bring a raiding party on them suddenly.
