Steady on, Ahaz

In the days of Ahaz son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to attack Jerusalem, but they couldn't take it. Word came to the house of David: Syria has camped in Ephraim's country. And his heart and the hearts of his people shook the way trees in a forest shake in the wind. Then the LORD said to Isaiah, ‘Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and Shearjashub your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, on the highway of the fuller's field.’ Say to him, ‘Take heed and be quiet. Don't be afraid or fainthearted because of these two smoking tails of firebrands — the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria and of Remaliah's son.’ Because Syria has plotted your ruin, along with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, saying: Let's go up against Judah and trouble it, make a breach in it for ourselves, and set up a king there — the son of Tabeal. This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘It will not stand, and it will not come to pass.’ The head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be broken so that it is no longer a people. The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah's son. If you won't believe, you surely won't be established.

In the days of Ahaz son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to attack Jerusalem, but they couldn't take it. Word came to the house of David: Aram has camped in Ephraim's country. And his heart and the hearts of his people shook the way trees in a forest shake in the wind. Then the Lord said to Isaiah: Go out and meet Ahaz, you and your son Shear-Jashub, at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer's Field. Say to him: Steady on. Keep calm. Don't be frightened, and don't lose your nerve over these two smoking stubs of firewood — over the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and the son of Remaliah. Because Aram has plotted your ruin, along with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, saying: Let's go up against Judah and tear it open and split it between us, and put the son of Tabeel on the throne in it. This is what the Lord God says: It won't stand. It won't happen. Because the head of Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is only Rezin. And within sixty-five years Ephraim will be too broken to be a people. The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is only the son of Remaliah. If you won't stand firm in faith, you won't stand at all.

And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it. And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind. Then said the LORD unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shearjashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field; And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah. Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against thee, saying, Let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal: Thus saith the Lord GOD, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass. For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people. And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.

The sign of Immanuel

The LORD spoke again to Ahaz, saying, ‘Ask for a sign from the LORD your God. Ask it either in the depth or in the height above.’ But Ahaz said, ‘I won't ask, and I won't tempt the LORD.’ Then Isaiah said, ‘Hear now, house of David. Is it not enough for you to weary men? Will you weary my God as well?’ So the Lord himself will give you a sign: a virgin will conceive and bear a son, and will call his name Immanuel. He'll eat butter and honey until he knows to refuse evil and choose good. Before the child knows to refuse evil and choose good, the land whose two kings you dread will be abandoned. The LORD will bring on you and on your people and on your father's house days like nothing since the day Ephraim broke away from Judah — he'll bring the king of Assyria.

The Lord spoke to Ahaz again: Ask for a sign from the Lord your God — as deep as the grave or as high as heaven. But Ahaz said: I won't ask. I won't put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said: Listen now, house of David. Isn't it enough to wear out people's patience? Have you got to wear out my God's as well? So the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look — the young woman will fall pregnant and give birth to a son, and she'll call him Immanuel. He'll be eating curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the wrong and choose the right. Because before the boy knows how to refuse the wrong and choose the right, the land of the two kings you're dreading will be left empty. The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on your father's house days like nothing since the day Ephraim broke away from Judah — he'll bring the king of Assyria.

Moreover the LORD spake again unto Ahaz, saying, Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD. And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good. For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings. The LORD shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.

The day that's coming

On that day the LORD will whistle for the fly from the far streams of Egypt and for the bee from the land of Assyria. And they'll all come and settle in the steep gullies and the cracks in the rocks, on all the thorn bushes and all the waterholes. On that day the LORD will shave with a razor hired from beyond the River — with the king of Assyria — the head and the hair of the legs, and it'll take off the beard as well. On that day a man will keep one young cow and two sheep alive, And because of the amount of milk they give he'll be eating curds. Everyone left in the land will live on curds and honey. On that day, in every place where there used to be a thousand vines worth a thousand pieces of silver, there'll be briars and thorns. People will go there with bow and arrows, because the whole land will be briars and thorns. And as for all the hills that used to be worked with a hoe, you won't go there for fear of the briars and thorns. They'll be a place to turn cattle loose and let sheep tread it down.

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes. In the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard. With arrows and with bows shall men come thither; because all the land shall become briers and thorns. And on all hills that shall be digged with the mattock, there shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattle.
