The vision and the call
In the year King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. One called to another: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.’ The posts of the door shook at the voice of the one who cried, and the house filled with smoke. Then I said, ‘I'm done for! I'm ruined. I'm a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.’ Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he'd taken with tongs from the altar. He touched my mouth with it and said, ‘Look, this has touched your lips. Your wrongdoing is taken away, and your sin is purged.’ Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom should I send, and who will go for us?’ I said, ‘Here am I. Send me.’ He said, ‘Go and tell this people: Hear indeed, but don't understand; see indeed, but don't perceive.’ Make this people's heart dull, make their ears heavy and shut their eyes, so they don't see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, turn back and be healed. Then I said, ‘Lord, how long?’ He answered, ‘Until the cities are ruined with nobody living in them, the houses are empty, and the land is utterly desolate, until the LORD has sent the people far away and the land is largely abandoned. But a tenth will still remain, and it will be burned again. Yet like a big tree or an oak that leaves a stump when it is cut down, the holy seed will be its stump.

Your guilt is taken away and your sin is paid for. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying: Who will I send? Who'll go for us? And I said: Here I am. Send me. And he said: Go and tell this people — hear and keep hearing, but don't understand. See and keep seeing, but don't take it in. Make the heart of this people fat, and their ears heavy, and shut their eyes. Otherwise they'd see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and turn back and be healed. Then I said: How long, Lord? And he said: Until the towns are wrecked with nobody in them and the houses are empty of people, and the land is left a wreck, and the Lord has sent everyone far away, and there are wide empty places in the middle of the land. And if a tenth is still in it, it'll be burnt over again — but like a terebinth or an oak that leaves a stump when it's felled, the holy seed is its stump.

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate, And the LORD have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land. But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
He said, ‘Go and tell this people: Hear indeed, but don't understand; see indeed, but don't perceive.’
And he said: Go and tell this people — hear and keep hearing, but don't understand. See and keep seeing, but don't take it in.
And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
Make this people's heart dull, make their ears heavy and shut their eyes, so they don't see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, turn back and be healed.

But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.
