The wickedness of man
And when men started to grow in number on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair, and they took wives from any they chose. And the Lord said: My spirit will not always strive with man, for he also is flesh. Yet his days will be a hundred and twenty years. There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and had children by them. These became mighty men of old, men of renown. And the Lord saw how far man had gone bad on the earth, and that every thought in his heart was rotten, all day long. And it grieved the Lord that he'd made man on the earth, and it cut him to the heart. And the Lord said: I'll wipe man off the face of the earth, the man I made — man and stock and creeping things and the birds of the sky. Because I'm sorry I ever made them.

And the Lord said: I'll wipe man out that I've created off the face of the earth — both man and animal and the crawling thing and the birds of the sky. Because it makes me sorry that I've made them.

Noah found favour
But the Lord was pleased with Noah. This is Noah's story. Noah was a just man, upright in his generation, and he walked with God. And Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. The whole place had gone rotten in God's eyes, and everywhere you looked someone was doing someone else over. And God looked at the world and saw the state of it, because everyone had made a mess of the way they lived. And God said to Noah: The end of all flesh has come before me, because the earth is filled with violence through them. I will destroy them with the earth. Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Build rooms in it and coat it inside and out with pitch. And this is how you'll make it: three hundred cubits long, fifty wide and thirty high. Put a window in it and finish it off a cubit from the top. Put the door in the side, and give it a lower deck, a second and a third. And look — I'm bringing a flood of water on the earth, to wreck everything with the breath of life in it under the sky. Everything on the earth will die. But I'll set up my covenant with you. And you'll go into the ark — you and your sons and your wife and your sons' wives with you. And of every living thing you'll bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you. They'll be male and female. Of the birds of their kind and the stock of their kind and every creeping thing of the ground of its kind, two of every sort will come to you to be kept alive. And take with you every kind of food that's eaten, and store it. It'll be food for you and for them. And Noah did it. Everything God ordered him — that's exactly what he did.
