Genesis 4

Adam slept with his wife Eve, and she fell pregnant and had Cain. “With the Lord's help I've brought a man into the world,” she said.

Then she had his brother Abel. Abel ran sheep. Cain worked the ground.

In time, Cain brought some of what he'd grown as an offering to the Lord.

And Abel brought some of the firstborn of his flock, the best of the fat. And the Lord looked with favour on Abel and his offering,

but on Cain and his offering He didn't. And Cain was furious, and his face fell.

And the Lord said to Cain, “What are you angry about? Why the face?

If you do what's right, won't you be lifted up? And if you don't — sin's crouching at your door. It wants you. But you've got to master it.”

And Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let's go out to the field.” And while they were out there, Cain turned on his brother and killed him.

And the Lord said to Cain, “Where's your brother Abel?” “I don't know,” he said. “Am I my brother's keeper?”

And the Lord said, “What have you done? Your brother's blood is calling out to me from the ground.

So now you're cursed off the ground — the ground that opened its mouth to take your brother's blood from your hand.

When you work it, it won't give you anything back. You'll be a wanderer and a drifter on the earth.”

And Cain said to the Lord, “This is more than I can carry.

You're driving me off the land today, and I'll be hidden from Your face. I'll be a wanderer and a drifter, and whoever finds me will kill me.”

And the Lord said to him, “No. Anyone who kills Cain will answer for it seven times over.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain, so that nobody who found him would kill him.

So Cain went out from the Lord's presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

Cain slept with his wife, and she fell pregnant and had Enoch. Cain was building a city at the time, and he named it after his son Enoch.

Enoch had Irad. Irad had Mehujael. Mehujael had Methushael. Methushael had Lamech.

Lamech married two women, one called Adah and the other Zillah.

Adah had Jabal. He was the father of everyone who lives in tents and runs livestock.

His brother's name was Jubal. He was the father of everyone who plays the harp and the pipe.

Zillah had Tubal-Cain, who forged tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.

And Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear me. Wives of Lamech, listen to what I'm telling you. I've killed a man for wounding me, a young bloke for striking me.

If Cain is answered for seven times over, then Lamech seventy-seven.”

Adam slept with his wife again, and she had a son and called him Seth. “God's given me another child in place of Abel,” she said, “since Cain killed him.”

Seth had a son too, and called him Enosh. That's when people started calling on the name of the Lord.
