The question
Now the snake was cleverer than any wild animal the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “So — God actually told you not to eat from any tree in the garden?” The woman said, “We can eat fruit from the trees in the garden. It's the tree in the middle. God said don't eat from it and don't touch it, or you'll die.” “You won't die,” said the snake. “God knows that the day you eat it your eyes will open, and you'll be like God, knowing good and bad.”

And the woman looked at the tree. Good for food. Easy on the eye. And it'd make you wise. So she took some and ate it, and she gave some to her husband, who was there with her, and he ate it too. And their eyes opened, both of them, and they knew they were naked. So they stitched fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

Then they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid from the Lord God among the trees. And the Lord God called to the man. “Where are you?” “I heard You in the garden,” he said, “and I was afraid, because I was naked. So I hid.” “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree I told you not to?” And the man said, “The woman You put here with me — she gave me the fruit, and I ate it.” So the Lord God said to the woman, “What have you done?” And the woman said, “The snake talked me into it, and I ate.”

And the Lord God called to the man. “Where are you?”
“I heard You in the garden,” he said, “and I was afraid, because I was naked. So I hid.”
“Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree I told you not to?”
And the man said, “The woman You put here with me — she gave me the fruit, and I ate it.”
So the Lord God said to the woman, “What have you done?” And the woman said, “The snake talked me into it, and I ate.”
What follows
So the Lord God said to the snake, “Because you've done this, you're cursed above all the livestock and every wild animal. You'll go on your belly, and you'll eat dust every day of your life. And I'll put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers. He'll crush your head, and you'll strike his heel.” To the woman He said, “I'll make your pains in childbearing severe. In pain you'll bring children into the world. Your longing will be for your husband, and he'll rule over you.” And to the man He said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree I told you not to — the ground is cursed because of you. You'll get your food out of it in hard labour, every day of your life. It'll throw up thorns and thistles at you, and you'll eat what grows in the field. You'll eat your bread in the sweat of your face until you go back to the ground — because that's where you came from. Dust you are, and to dust you'll go back.”

The man named his wife Eve, because she'd be the mother of everyone living. And the Lord God made clothes out of skins for the man and his wife, and dressed them. And the Lord God said, “The man's become like one of us now, knowing good and bad. He mustn't reach out and take from the tree of life as well, and eat, and live forever.” So the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to work the ground he'd been taken from. He drove the man out, and east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim, and a flaming sword turning every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
