Joseph in Potiphar's house
And Joseph was taken down to Egypt. And Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's and head of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him off the Ishmeelites who'd brought him down there. And the Lord was with Joseph, and he did well. And he was in the house of his Egyptian master. And his master saw the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made everything he turned his hand to come off. Joseph pleased Potiphar and served him. Potiphar made him overseer over his house and put everything he had into his hands. And from the time he put him over the house and everything in it, the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house on Joseph's account. The blessing of the Lord was on everything he had, in the house and out in the paddocks. And he left everything he had in Joseph's hands, and gave no thought to anything except the food he ate. And Joseph was handsome and well built. And after a while his master's wife took a shine to Joseph, and she said: Come to bed with me. But he refused and said to his master's wife: Look, my master does not concern himself with anything in this house. He has committed everything he has into my hands. There's nobody in this house above me. He hasn't held one thing back from me except you, because you're his wife. So how could I do a thing that rotten, and sin against God? And she was at him about it day after day, and he wouldn't listen — wouldn't sleep with her, wouldn't be alone with her. And about this time he came into the house to get on with his work, and there wasn't a man of the household inside. And she caught him by his coat and said: Come to bed with me. But he left his coat in her hand, fled, and got outside. And when she saw he'd left his coat in her hand and cleared out, she called the men of the house in and said to them: Look at this — he's brought a Hebrew in here to make fools of us. He came in to sleep with me and I screamed out. And when he heard me raise my voice and scream, he left his coat with me, fled, and got outside. And she kept the coat by her till his master came home. And she gave him the same story: That Hebrew servant you brought in here came at me to make a fool of me. And when I raised my voice and screamed, he left his coat with me and fled outside. When his master heard his wife's story — this is what your servant did to me — his anger flared. And Joseph's master took him and put him in the prison, the place where the king's prisoners were held. And there he stopped, in the prison.

And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand; There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her. And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within. And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth, That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice: And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out. And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home. And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me: And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out. And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled. And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.
