And about that time Judah went down from his brothers and turned in at the place of an Adullamite called Hirah. So when he went in to his brother's wife, he spilled it on the ground, so as not to give offspring to his brother. And what he did was evil in the LORD's eyes, and he took his life too. Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law: Remain a widow at your father's house until my son Shelah is grown. Because he thought: He might die too, like his brothers. And Tamar went and lived in her father's house.

And he turned in to her by the road and said: Let me sleep with you. He didn't know she was his daughter-in-law. And she said: What'll you give me if I sleep with you? And he said: I'll send you a young goat from the flock. And she said: Will you give me something on it till you send it? And he said: What do you want? And she said: Your seal and its cord, and the stick in your hand. And he gave them to her, and came in to her, and she fell pregnant by him. And she got up and went off, and put away her veil and put her widow's clothes back on. And Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite to get his pledge back from the woman, but he could not find her. So he asked the men of the place: Where's the prostitute who was out by the road here? And they said: There's been no prostitute here. And he went back to Judah and said: I can't find her. And the men of the place say there's been no prostitute there. And Judah said: Let her keep it, or we'll be the laughing stock. I sent the goat, and you couldn't find her. And about three months later Judah was told: Tamar your daughter-in-law has prostituted herself, and she is pregnant by it. And Judah said: Bring her out and let her be burnt. When she was brought out, she sent word to her father-in-law: I'm pregnant by the man these belong to. And she said: Have a look and see whose these are — the seal and its cord, and the stick. And Judah owned them, and said: She's been straighter than I have, because I didn't give her to my son Shelah. And he never went near her again. And when her time came, there were twins in her womb. And while she was in labour one put out a hand. And the midwife took it and tied a scarlet thread on his hand and said: This one came out first. And as he drew his hand back, out came his brother. And she said: What a way to break out. So he was called Pharez. And after that his brother came out with the scarlet thread on his hand. And he was called Zarah.

And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me? And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it? And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him. And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood. And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not. Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place. And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place. And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her. And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt. When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff. And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more. And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb. And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first. And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.
