The garden

And out of the ground the Lord God grew every tree that is a delight to look at and good for food — and in the middle of the garden, the tree of life, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And a river ran out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four headwaters. The name of the first is Pison. It winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium is there too, and onyx stone. And the name of the second river is Gihon. It winds through the whole land of Cush. And the name of the third river is Hiddekel. It runs east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. And the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden, to work it and look after it. And the Lord God gave the man an order: You may eat freely from any tree in the garden. But not from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The day you eat from that one, you will surely die.

And whatever the man called each living thing, that was its name. And the man gave names to all the stock, and to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal. But for the man there was no helper found to match him. So the Lord God put the man into a deep sleep, and while he slept he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place. And the rib the Lord God had taken out of the man he made into a woman, and he brought her to the man. And the man said: This one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She'll be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. That is why a man leaves his father and his mother and holds fast to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh. And the two of them were naked, the man and his wife, and they felt no shame.
