Jacob meets Rachel
Then Jacob got on his way and came into the country of the people of the east. And he looked, and there was a well out in the open, with three mobs of sheep lying about it, because that's where they watered them. And there was a big stone over the mouth of the well. And all the flocks were gathered there. They would roll the stone from the mouth of the well, water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place. And Jacob said to them: Where are you fellows from? And while he was still talking to them, Rachel came up with her father's sheep. She was the one looking after them. And when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and Laban's sheep, he went over and rolled the stone off the mouth of the well and watered his uncle Laban's flock. And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice and wept. And Jacob told Rachel he was her father's kin, and Rebekah's son. And she ran and told her father. And when Laban heard the news of Jacob his sister's son, he ran out to meet him and threw his arms round him and kissed him and brought him home. And Jacob told Laban the whole story. And Laban said: You're my own bone and flesh, right enough. And he stopped with him a month.

The elder was Leah and the younger was Rachel. Leah had soft eyes, but Rachel was a good-looking girl and well made. And Jacob was gone on Rachel, and he said: I'll work seven years for you for Rachel, your younger daughter. And Laban said: Better that I give her to you than to another man. Stay here with me. So Jacob worked seven years for Rachel. And they seemed like a few days to him, for the love he had for her. And Jacob said to Laban: Give me my wife. My time's up, and I want to sleep with her. And Laban got together all the men of the place and put on a feed. And in the evening he took Leah his daughter and brought her in to him, and he slept with her. And Laban gave his daughter Leah his servant Zilpah for a servant. And in the morning — there was Leah. And he said to Laban: What's this you've done to me? Wasn't it for Rachel I worked for you? What did you have me on for? And Laban said: It's not done in our country, giving the younger one before the firstborn. See out her week, and we'll give you the other one too, for another seven years' work with me. And Jacob did that, and saw out her week. And he gave him Rachel his daughter for a wife too. And Laban gave Rachel his daughter his servant Bilhah for her servant. And he went in to Rachel too, and he loved Rachel more than Leah, and worked for him another seven years.

And she fell pregnant again and had a son, and said: This time I'll praise the Lord. So she called him Judah. And she stopped having children.
