And when Rachel saw she wasn't giving Jacob any children, she got filthy on her sister, and said to Jacob: Give me children, or I'm as good as dead. And Jacob's anger flared against Rachel: Am I in God's place? He is the one who has kept you from having children. And she said: Here is my servant Bilhah. Sleep with her, and she will bear children on my knees, so I may also have a family through her. So she gave him Bilhah her servant for a wife, and Jacob slept with her. And Bilhah fell pregnant and had Jacob a son. And Rachel said: God has judged for me, and heard me too, and given me a son. So she called him Dan. And when Rachel had had Joseph, Jacob said to Laban: Let me go. I want to head back to my own place and my own country. Give me my wives and my children — I've worked for you for them — and let me go. You know what sort of work I've put in for you. And Laban said to him: If you are pleased with me, please stay. I have learned by experience that the Lord has blessed me because of you. And he said: Name your wages and I'll pay them. And he said: You know how I've worked for you, and how your stock have gone with me. You had next to nothing before I came, and now it's grown into a mob. The Lord has blessed you since I got here. And when do I get to set up something for my own household? And he said: What'll I give you? And Jacob said: You won't give me a thing. Do this one thing for me and I'll go back to running and minding your flock. I'll go through your whole flock today and cut out every speckled and spotted one, and every dark one among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats. That'll be my wages. And my honesty will answer for me down the track, when you come to check my wages: anything that isn't speckled or spotted among the goats, or dark among the sheep, you can count as stolen. And Laban said: Right — let it be the way you say. And that same day he cut out the streaked and spotted he-goats and all the speckled and spotted she-goats, every one with white on it, and all the dark ones among the sheep, and handed them over to his sons. And he put three days' travel between himself and Jacob. And Jacob ran the rest of Laban's flocks. And Jacob got himself green rods of poplar and hazel and chestnut, and peeled white strips in them, so the white showed through. And he stood the rods he'd peeled in front of the flocks, in the troughs where they came to drink, so they'd breed when they came in to water. And the flocks bred in front of the rods, and threw streaked, speckled and spotted young. And Jacob drafted the lambs off, and turned the flocks toward the streaked and all the dark ones in Laban's flock. And he kept his own mobs to themselves and didn't run them with Laban's. And whenever the strong ones came on, Jacob would stand the rods in the troughs in front of them, so they'd breed among the rods. But when the stock were weak, he didn't put them in. So the weak ones went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob. And the man came on in a big way. He had a lot of stock, and maids and servants, and camels and donkeys.
And when Rachel had had Joseph, Jacob said to Laban: Send me away, so I can go to my own place and to my country. Give me my wives and my children that I've served you for, and let me go. Because you know the service I've done you. And Laban said to him: If I've found favour in your eyes, stay, please. I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my hire. So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted stolen with me. But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s. And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses.
And when Rachel had had Joseph, Jacob said to Laban: Let me go. I want to head back to my own place and my own country.
