Take your son
Some time later God tested Abraham. “Abraham.” “Here I am,” he said. And He said, “Take your son. Your only son, Isaac, the one you love. Go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I'll tell you about.” Early next morning Abraham got up, saddled his donkey, took two of his men and his son Isaac, cut the wood for the burnt offering, and set out for the place God had told him about. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place a long way off. And he said to his men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there. We'll worship, and we'll come back to you.”
Some time later God tested Abraham. “Abraham.” “Here I am,” he said.
And He said, “Take your son. Your only son, Isaac, the one you love. Go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I'll tell you about.”
Early next morning Abraham got up, saddled his donkey, took two of his men and his son Isaac, cut the wood for the burnt offering, and set out for the place God had told him about.
On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place a long way off.
And he said to his men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there. We'll worship, and we'll come back to you.”
The two of them walked on together
And Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and put it on his son Isaac, and he carried the fire and the knife himself. And the two of them walked on together. And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “Father.” “Yes, son,” he said. And he said, “We've got the fire and the wood. Where's the lamb for the burnt offering?” And Abraham said, “God will see to the lamb for the burnt offering, son.” And the two of them walked on together. When they came to the place God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and set the wood on it. And he tied up his son Isaac and put him on the altar, on top of the wood. And Abraham put out his hand and took the knife to kill his son.
And Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and put it on his son Isaac, and he carried the fire and the knife himself. And the two of them walked on together.
And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “Father.” “Yes, son,” he said. And he said, “We've got the fire and the wood. Where's the lamb for the burnt offering?”
And Abraham said, “God will see to the lamb for the burnt offering, son.” And the two of them walked on together.
When they came to the place God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and set the wood on it. And he tied up his son Isaac and put him on the altar, on top of the wood.
And Abraham put out his hand and took the knife to kill his son.
The ram
And the angel of the Lord called to him out of heaven. “Abraham. Abraham.” “Here I am,” he said. And He said, “Don't lay a hand on the boy. Don't do anything to him. Now I know you fear God, because you haven't held back your son, your only son, from me.” And Abraham looked up, and there behind him was a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called that place The Lord Will See To It. And it's said to this day, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be seen to.”
And the angel of the Lord called to him out of heaven. “Abraham. Abraham.” “Here I am,” he said.
And He said, “Don't lay a hand on the boy. Don't do anything to him. Now I know you fear God, because you haven't held back your son, your only son, from me.”
And Abraham looked up, and there behind him was a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son.
And Abraham called that place The Lord Will See To It. And it's said to this day, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be seen to.”
A second time
And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham out of heaven a second time, and said, “I swear by myself, says the Lord, that because you've done this and haven't held back your son, your only son, I'll surely bless you, and I'll surely multiply your descendants like the stars in the sky and like the sand on the seashore. And your descendants will take the gates of their enemies, and through your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you've obeyed me.” Then Abraham went back to his men, and together they set off for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed at Beersheba.
And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham out of heaven a second time,
and said, “I swear by myself, says the Lord, that because you've done this and haven't held back your son, your only son,
I'll surely bless you, and I'll surely multiply your descendants like the stars in the sky and like the sand on the seashore. And your descendants will take the gates of their enemies,
and through your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you've obeyed me.”
Then Abraham went back to his men, and together they set off for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed at Beersheba.
News from home
Some time later Abraham was told, “Milcah has had children too — sons for your brother Nahor: Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram, Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.” Bethuel had Rebekah. Milcah had these eight sons for Nahor, Abraham's brother. And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, had children too: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.
Some time later Abraham was told, “Milcah has had children too — sons for your brother Nahor:
Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram,
Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.”
Bethuel had Rebekah. Milcah had these eight sons for Nahor, Abraham's brother.
And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, had children too: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.
