The test
And after these things God tested Abraham and said to him: Abraham. And he said: Here I am. And he said: Take your son now, your only son Isaac, who you love, and go to the land of Moriah. And offer him there for a burnt offering on one of the mountains I'll tell you. And Abraham got up early in the morning and saddled his donkey and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son. And he split the wood for the burnt offering and got up and went to the place God had told him. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place a long way off. And Abraham said to his young men: Stay here with the donkey. And I and the boy will go over there and bow down and come back to you. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took the fire in his hand and a knife. And the two of them went together. And Isaac spoke to Abraham his father: My father. And he said: Here I am, my son. And he said: Look — the fire and the wood. But where's the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said: My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering. So the two of them went together. And they came to the place God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order, and tied up Isaac his son and laid him on the altar on the wood. And Abraham put out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. And the angel of the Lord called to him out of heaven: Abraham, Abraham. And he said: Here I am. And he said: Don't lay your hand on the boy, and don't do anything to him. Because now I know you fear God, seeing you haven't held back your son, your only son, from me. And Abraham looked up and saw, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place The Lord Will Provide, the way it's said to this day: On the mountain of the Lord it'll be provided.

And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham out of heaven a second time, and said: I've sworn by myself, says the Lord, because you've done this thing and haven't held back your son, your only son — I will surely bless you, and I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven and the sand on the seashore. And your offspring will possess the gate of their enemies. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you've listened to my voice. So Abraham went back to his young men, and they got up and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived at Beersheba. And after these things Abraham was told: Look — Milcah has had children too to your brother Nahor — Huz his firstborn and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram, and Chesed and Hazo and Pildash and Jidlaph and Bethuel. And Bethuel fathered Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother. And the woman he had besides, whose name was Reumah, she had Tebah too and Gaham and Thahash and Maachah.
And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham out of heaven a second time, and said: I've sworn by myself, says the Lord, because you've done this thing and haven't held back your son, your only son — that in blessing I'll bless you, and in growing many I'll make your offspring many, like the stars of the sky and like the sand on the seashore. And your offspring will own the gate of the ones against them. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you've listened to my voice. So Abraham went back to his young men, and they got up and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived at Beersheba. So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.
