The cave of Machpelah
And Sarah lived a hundred and twenty-seven years. That was the length of Sarah's life. And Sarah died at Kirjatharba, which is Hebron, in the land of Canaan. And Abraham came in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. And Abraham got up from beside his dead and spoke to the sons of Heth: I'm a stranger here, only stopping among you. Sell me a bit of ground for a burial place, so I can bury my dead out of my sight. And the sons of Heth answered Abraham: Hear us out, my lord. You're a prince among us. Bury your dead in the pick of our graves. Not one of us would knock you back for his grave to bury your dead in. And Abraham got up and bowed to the people of the land, to the sons of Heth. And he talked it over with them: If you're happy for me to bury my dead out of my sight, hear me out and put in a word for me with Ephron son of Zohar, so he will give me the cave of Machpelah, which he owns at the end of his field. Let him give it to me for its full price as a burial place among you. Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of Heth. And Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in front of the sons of Heth, in front of everyone coming in at the gate of his town: No, my lord, hear me. I give you the field, and I give you the cave in it. In the presence of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead. And Abraham bowed down in front of the people of the land. And he spoke to Ephron in front of the people of the land: Please hear me. I will pay the price of the field. Take it from me, and I will bury my dead there. And Ephron answered Abraham: My lord, hear me out. The land's worth four hundred shekels of silver. What's that between you and me? Go and bury your dead. And Abraham took Ephron at his word, and weighed him out the silver he'd named in front of the sons of Heth — four hundred shekels, at the going rate among the traders. So the field of Ephron at Machpelah, before Mamre — the field, the cave in it, and every tree within its boundaries — was made over to Abraham as a possession, in the presence of the sons of Heth and everyone who entered the gate of his city. And after this Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre, which is Hebron, in the land of Canaan. And the field, and the cave in it, were made over to Abraham by the sons of Heth as a burial place.

Bury your dead in the best of our graves. None of us will hold back his grave from you, so you can't bury your dead. And Abraham got up and bowed himself to the people of the land, to the sons of Heth. And he spoke with them: If it's your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight, listen to me and plead for me with Ephron son of Zohar, so he gives me the cave of Machpelah that he's got, that's at the end of his field. For as much money as it's worth, let him give it to me as a burial place among you. And Ephron was living among the sons of Heth. And Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the sons of Heth, of everyone who went into the gate of his town: No, my lord, listen to me. And the field of Ephron in Machpelah, in front of Mamre, the field and the cave in it, and all the trees in the field that were in all the borders round about, were settled on Abraham as his own, in the sight of the sons of Heth, in front of everyone who went into the gate of his town. And after this Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah in front of Mamre, which is Hebron in the land of Canaan. And the field and the cave in it were settled on Abraham as a burial place by the sons of Heth.
And Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah. And Sarah died in Kirjatharba; the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan: and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her. And Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spake unto the sons of Heth, saying, I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight. And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying unto him, Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead. And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth. And he communed with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight; hear me, and intreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar, That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a buryingplace amongst you. And Ephron dwelt among the children of Heth: and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of the children of Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying, Nay, my lord, hear me: the field give I thee, and the cave that is therein, I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee: bury thy dead. And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land. And he spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, But if thou wilt give it, I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee money for the field; take it of me, and I will bury my dead there. And Ephron answered Abraham, saying unto him, My lord, hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that betwixt me and thee? bury therefore thy dead. And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant. And the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made sure Unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city. And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the sons of Heth.
