Genesis 17

When Abram was ninety-nine, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty. Walk before me, and be blameless.

I'll make my covenant between me and you, and I'll multiply you greatly.”

And Abram fell face down, and God said to him,

“As for me, this is my covenant with you: you'll be the father of many nations.

You won't be called Abram any more. Your name will be Abraham, because I've made you the father of many nations.

I'll make you very fruitful. I'll make nations of you, and kings will come from you.

And I'll set up my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you, generation after generation, as an everlasting covenant — to be your God, and the God of your descendants after you.

And I'll give you and your descendants the land you're living in as a foreigner, the whole land of Canaan, to hold for good. And I'll be their God.”

And God said to Abraham, “As for you, you're to keep my covenant — you and your descendants after you, generation after generation.

This is my covenant, which you're to keep, between me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you is to be circumcised.

You're to circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and it'll be the sign of the covenant between me and you.

Every male among you, at eight days old, is to be circumcised, generation after generation — those born in your household and those bought with money from a foreigner who isn't your offspring.

Whether born in your household or bought with your money, he must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh will be an everlasting covenant.

Any uncircumcised male, who hasn't had the flesh of his foreskin circumcised, is to be cut off from his people. He's broken my covenant.”

And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you're not to call her Sarai. Her name is Sarah.

I'll bless her, and I'll give you a son by her as well. I'll bless her, and she'll become nations. Kings of peoples will come from her.”

And Abraham fell face down and laughed, and said to himself, “Is a man of a hundred going to have a son? Is Sarah going to have a child at ninety?”

And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under Your blessing.”

And God said, “No — your wife Sarah will have a son for you, and you'll call him Isaac. And I'll set up my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.

As for Ishmael, I've heard you. I'll bless him. I'll make him fruitful and multiply him greatly. He'll be the father of twelve rulers, and I'll make him into a great nation.

But I'll set up my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will have for you this time next year.”

And when He'd finished speaking with him, God went up from Abraham.

That very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and everyone born in his household and everyone bought with his money — every male in his household — and circumcised them, just as God had told him.

Abraham was ninety-nine when he was circumcised,

and his son Ishmael was thirteen.

Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on the same day,

and every male in his household with him, born in the household or bought with money from a foreigner.
