Sarai's plan
Sarai, Abram's wife, hadn't had any children for him. She had an Egyptian servant called Hagar, and Sarai said to Abram, “The Lord's kept me from having children. Go to my servant. Maybe I can build a family through her.” And Abram listened to Sarai. So after Abram had been ten years in Canaan, Sarai his wife took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram as a wife. He slept with Hagar and she fell pregnant. And when she knew she was pregnant, she started looking down on her mistress. And Sarai said to Abram, “This is on you. I put my servant in your arms, and now she knows she's pregnant she looks down on me. Let the Lord judge between you and me.” And Abram said to Sarai, “She's your servant. Do what you think best.” So Sarai treated her harshly, and Hagar ran away from her.

And Abram said to Sarai, “She's your servant. Do what you think best.” So Sarai treated her harshly, and Hagar ran away from her.
The spring in the desert
And the angel of the Lord found her by a spring out in the desert, the spring on the road to Shur. And he said, “Hagar, Sarai's servant — where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I'm running from my mistress Sarai,” she said. And the angel of the Lord said to her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” And the angel of the Lord said, “I'll increase your descendants so much that they'll be too many to count.” And the angel of the Lord said to her, “You're pregnant, and you'll have a son. You'll call him Ishmael, because the Lord has heard your suffering. He'll be a wild donkey of a man, his hand against everyone and everyone's hand against him. He'll live at odds with all his brothers.”

The God who sees me
And she gave the Lord who'd spoken to her a name. “You're the God who sees me.” Because she said, “Have I really seen the One who sees me, and lived?” That's why the well is called Beer-Lahai-Roi. It's still there, between Kadesh and Bered. So Hagar had a son for Abram, and Abram named the son she'd had Ishmael. Abram was eighty-six when Hagar had Ishmael for him.
And she gave the Lord who'd spoken to her a name. “You're the God who sees me.” Because she said, “Have I really seen the One who sees me, and lived?”
That's why the well is called Beer-Lahai-Roi. It's still there, between Kadesh and Bered.
So Hagar had a son for Abram, and Abram named the son she'd had Ishmael.
Abram was eighty-six when Hagar had Ishmael for him.
