Three men at Mamre
And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. He was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day. And he looked up, and there were three men standing there. And when he saw them he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. And he said: My lord, if you are pleased with me, don't go straight past your servant. Let me get a bit of water, and you can wash your feet and have a spell under the tree. And I'll bring you a bite to eat, and you can pick yourselves up before you push on. That's what you've come by your servant for. And they said: Go on then, do as you say. And Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said: Quick — three measures of good flour. Knead it and make some cakes. And Abraham ran out to the herd and picked out a good young calf, and gave it to a servant, who got stuck into getting it ready. And he took butter and milk and the calf he had prepared, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree while they ate. And they said to him: Where's Sarah your wife? And he said: In the tent. And he said: I'll be back this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son. And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well on in years, and Sarah was long past having children. So Sarah laughed within herself: After I am worn out, will I really have pleasure, with my husband old as well? And the Lord said to Abraham: What's Sarah laughing about, saying: Am I really going to have a child at my age? Is there anything too hard for the Lord? I'll be back at the time set, this time next year, and Sarah will have a son. Then Sarah denied it: I didn't laugh. Because she was scared. And he said: You did laugh.
And the Lord showed himself to him by the oaks of Mamre as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day. And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and there were three men standing by him. And when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the ground. And he said: My Lord, if I've found favour in your sight now, don't go past your servant, please. And Abraham ran to the herd and got a young calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man. And he hurried to get it ready. And he took butter and milk and the calf he'd got ready, and set it in front of them. And he stood by them under the tree, and they ate. And they said to him: Where's Sarah your wife? And he said: Look — in the tent. And he said: I'll definitely come back to you at this time of life. And look — Sarah your wife will have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well on in years. And it had stopped being with Sarah the way it is with women. So Sarah laughed inside herself: After I've got old, will I have pleasure, and my lord old too? And the Lord said to Abraham: Why did Sarah laugh and say, Will I really have a child, seeing I'm old? Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the set time I'll come back to you, at this time of life, and Sarah will have a son. Then Sarah denied it: I didn't laugh. Because she was frightened. And he said: No — you did laugh.
And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, And said, My LORD, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant: Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree: And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said. And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth. And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it. And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat. And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent. And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.

And he said: I'll be back this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son. And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him.
And he said: I'll definitely come back to you at this time of life. And look — Sarah your wife will have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.
And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.
Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well on in years, and Sarah was long past having children.
Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well on in years. And it had stopped being with Sarah the way it is with women.
Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.
So Sarah laughed within herself: After I am worn out, will I really have pleasure, with my husband old as well?
So Sarah laughed inside herself: After I've got old, will I have pleasure, and my lord old too?
Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?
And the Lord said to Abraham: What's Sarah laughing about, saying: Am I really going to have a child at my age?
And the Lord said to Abraham: Why did Sarah laugh and say, Will I really have a child, seeing I'm old?
And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?
Is there anything too hard for the Lord? I'll be back at the time set, this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.
Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the set time I'll come back to you, at this time of life, and Sarah will have a son.
Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
Then Sarah denied it: I didn't laugh. Because she was scared. And he said: You did laugh.
Then Sarah denied it: I didn't laugh. Because she was frightened. And he said: No — you did laugh.
Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.
Abraham pleads for Sodom
And the men got up from there and looked out toward Sodom. And Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. And the Lord said: Am I going to keep from Abraham what I'm about to do? Seeing Abraham's going to be a great and strong nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him. Because I know him — he'll give orders to his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord and do what's right and fair. So the Lord can bring on Abraham what he's promised him. And the Lord said: The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is loud, and their sin is a heavy one. I'll go down now and see whether they've done the whole of what the outcry says. And if not, I'll know. And the men turned and went off toward Sodom. But Abraham was still standing in front of the Lord. And Abraham came near and said: Will you really sweep away the righteous with the wicked? What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? You would never do such a thing — kill the righteous with the wicked and treat them both alike. Surely not. Won't the Judge of all the earth do what is right? And the Lord said: If I find fifty righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake. And Abraham answered: Look at me, taking it on myself to talk to the Lord — and I'm only dust and ashes. What if the fifty comes up five short? Will you wreck the whole town over five? And he said: I won't wreck it if I find forty-five. And he spoke to him again: What if forty are found there? And he said: I will not do it for the sake of forty. And he said: Please do not let the Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if thirty are found there? And he said: I will not do it if I find thirty there. And he said: Look, I've taken it on myself to talk to the Lord. What if there's twenty found there? And he said: I won't wreck it for the twenty's sake. And he said: Please do not let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there? And he said: I will not destroy it for the sake of ten. And the Lord went his way as soon as he'd finished with Abraham. And Abraham went back home.
And the men got up from there and looked towards Sodom. And Abraham went with them to send them on the way. And the Lord said: Should I hide from Abraham what I'm doing, seeing Abraham will definitely turn into a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him? Because I know him, that he'll order his children and his household after him, and they'll keep the way of the Lord to do righteousness and judgment — so the Lord can bring on Abraham what he's spoken about him. And the Lord said: Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great and because their sin is very bad, I'll go down now and see whether they've done altogether according to the cry of it that's come to me. And if not, I'll know. And the men turned their faces from there and went towards Sodom. But Abraham still stood in front of the Lord. And Abraham came near and said: Will you wipe out the righteous with the wicked? Maybe there are fifty righteous inside the town. Will you wipe out and not spare the place for the fifty righteous in it? Far be it from you to do a thing like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so the righteous is like the wicked. Far be it from you. Won't the Judge of all the earth do right? And the Lord said: If I find fifty righteous in Sodom inside the town, then I'll spare the whole place for their sakes. And Abraham answered: Look now — I've taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, and I'm dust and ashes. Maybe there'll be five short of the fifty righteous. Will you wreck the whole town for the five short? And he said: If I find forty-five there, I won't wreck it. And he spoke to him again: Maybe there'll be forty found there. And he said: I won't do it for forty's sake. And he said: Don't let the Lord be angry, please, and I'll speak. Maybe there'll be thirty found there. And he said: I won't do it if I find thirty there. And he said: Look now — I've taken it on myself to speak to the Lord. Maybe there'll be twenty found there. And he said: I won't wreck it for twenty's sake. And he said: Don't let the Lord be angry, please, and I'll speak just this once. Maybe ten will be found there. And he said: I won't wreck it for ten's sake. And the Lord went his way when he'd finished talking with Abraham. And Abraham went back to his place.
And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way. And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do; Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him. And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know. And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD. And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked? Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein? That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty’s sake. And he said, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake. And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.
And the men got up from there and looked out toward Sodom. And Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way.

And the Lord said: Am I going to keep from Abraham what I'm about to do?
And the Lord said: Should I hide from Abraham what I'm doing,
And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;
Seeing Abraham's going to be a great and strong nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him.
seeing Abraham will definitely turn into a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him?
Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
Because I know him — he'll give orders to his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord and do what's right and fair. So the Lord can bring on Abraham what he's promised him.
Because I know him, that he'll order his children and his household after him, and they'll keep the way of the Lord to do righteousness and judgment — so the Lord can bring on Abraham what he's spoken about him.
For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
And the Lord said: The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is loud, and their sin is a heavy one.
And the Lord said: Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great and because their sin is very bad,
And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;
I'll go down now and see whether they've done the whole of what the outcry says. And if not, I'll know.
I'll go down now and see whether they've done altogether according to the cry of it that's come to me. And if not, I'll know.
I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.
And the men turned and went off toward Sodom. But Abraham was still standing in front of the Lord.
And the men turned their faces from there and went towards Sodom. But Abraham still stood in front of the Lord.
And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.
And Abraham came near and said: Will you really sweep away the righteous with the wicked?
And Abraham came near and said: Will you wipe out the righteous with the wicked?
And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?
Maybe there are fifty righteous inside the town. Will you wipe out and not spare the place for the fifty righteous in it?
Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?
You would never do such a thing — kill the righteous with the wicked and treat them both alike. Surely not. Won't the Judge of all the earth do what is right?
Far be it from you to do a thing like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so the righteous is like the wicked. Far be it from you. Won't the Judge of all the earth do right?
That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?
And the Lord said: If I find fifty righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.
And the Lord said: If I find fifty righteous in Sodom inside the town, then I'll spare the whole place for their sakes.
And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.
And Abraham answered: Look at me, taking it on myself to talk to the Lord — and I'm only dust and ashes.
And Abraham answered: Look now — I've taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, and I'm dust and ashes.
And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD, which am but dust and ashes:
What if the fifty comes up five short? Will you wreck the whole town over five? And he said: I won't wreck it if I find forty-five.
Maybe there'll be five short of the fifty righteous. Will you wreck the whole town for the five short? And he said: If I find forty-five there, I won't wreck it.
Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.
And he spoke to him again: What if forty are found there? And he said: I will not do it for the sake of forty.
And he spoke to him again: Maybe there'll be forty found there. And he said: I won't do it for forty's sake.
And he spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty’s sake.
And he said: Please do not let the Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if thirty are found there? And he said: I will not do it if I find thirty there.
And he said: Don't let the Lord be angry, please, and I'll speak. Maybe there'll be thirty found there. And he said: I won't do it if I find thirty there.
And he said unto him, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.
And he said: Look, I've taken it on myself to talk to the Lord. What if there's twenty found there? And he said: I won't wreck it for the twenty's sake.

And he said: Please do not let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there? And he said: I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.
And he said: Don't let the Lord be angry, please, and I'll speak just this once. Maybe ten will be found there. And he said: I won't wreck it for ten's sake.
And he said, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.
And the Lord went his way as soon as he'd finished with Abraham. And Abraham went back home.
And the Lord went his way when he'd finished talking with Abraham. And Abraham went back to his place.
And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.
