Count the stars
After all this the Lord spoke to Abram in a vision: Don't be frightened, Abram. I'm your shield, and your reward will be great. And Abram said: Lord God, what will you give me, seeing I am still childless, and the steward of my house is Eliezer of Damascus? And Abram said: Look, you have given me no offspring, and one born in my house will be my heir. And then the Lord spoke to him: That man won't be your heir. One who comes out of your own body will be your heir. And he took him outside and said: Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can count them. And he said to him: That's how many your offspring will be. And he believed in the Lord, and he counted it to him for righteousness.

And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

The covenant

And he brought all these to him, divided them down the middle, and laid each half opposite the other. But he did not divide the birds. And when the birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram shooed them off. And as the sun was going down a dead sleep came over Abram, and a great dark dread came down on him. And he said to Abram: You can be sure of this — your offspring will be strangers in a country that isn't theirs, and they'll serve them, and be treated hard for four hundred years. And I'll judge the nation they serve. And afterwards they'll come out with plenty behind them. And you'll go to your fathers in peace, and be buried at a good old age. And in the fourth generation they'll come back here. Because the wrongdoing of the Amorites isn't full up yet. And when the sun had gone down and it was dark, there was a smoking firepot and a burning torch that passed between the pieces. That same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram: I've given this land to your offspring, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates — the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.
