Abram and Lot part
And Abram came up out of Egypt into the south country, him and his wife and everything he had, and Lot with him. And Abram was doing very well — stock, silver and gold. And he worked his way up from the south as far as Bethel, back to the place he'd camped at the start, between Bethel and Hai, to the place where he'd built the altar first up. And there Abram called on the name of the Lord. And Lot, who was travelling with Abram, had flocks and herds and tents of his own. And the land could not support them living together, because their possessions were so great that they could not stay together. And there was conflict between Abram's stockmen and Lot's stockmen. The Canaanite and the Perizzite were living in the land at the time. And Abram said to Lot: Let there be no quarrel between you and me, or between my stockmen and yours. We are family. The whole country's in front of you, isn't it? Go your own way. If you take the left, I'll go right. If you go right, I'll take the left. And Lot had a look round and saw the whole Jordan plain — well watered the length of it, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, all the way down to Zoar. This was before the Lord wrecked Sodom and Gomorrah. So Lot took the whole Jordan plain for himself and headed east. And the two of them split up. Abram stopped in the land of Canaan, and Lot settled among the towns of the plain and pitched his tent as far over as Sodom. But the men of Sodom were a bad lot, and sinners against the Lord, right through.

Because what they had was so much that they couldn't live together. And there was arguing between the herdsmen of Abram's cattle and the herdsmen of Lot's cattle. And the Canaanite and the Perizzite were living in the land then. And Abram said to Lot: Don't let there be a fight between me and you, please, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen. Because we're brothers. Isn't the whole land in front of you? Split off from me, please. If you take the left hand, then I'll go to the right. Or if you go to the right hand, then I'll go to the left. And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere, before the Lord wrecked Sodom and Gomorrah — like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt as you come to Zoar. Then Lot chose all the plain of the Jordan for himself. And Lot travelled east. And they split off from each other. Abram lived in the land of Canaan, and Lot lived in the towns of the plain and pitched his tent towards Sodom. But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners in front of the Lord, badly.

Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left. And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

The promise of the land
And after Lot had gone his own way, the Lord said to Abram: Lift your eyes and have a look from where you're standing — north and south, east and west. Because all the country you can see, I'll give to you and to your offspring for good. And I'll make your offspring like the dust of the earth. If a man could count the dust, then he could count them. Get up and walk the length and breadth of it, because I'm giving it to you. So Abram shifted his tent and came and settled by the oaks of Mamre at Hebron. And he built an altar there to the Lord.
And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had split off from him: Lift up your eyes now and look from the place where you are — northward and southward and eastward and westward. Because all the land you see, I'll give it to you and to your offspring forever. And I'll make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so if a man could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted too. Get up, walk through the land in its length and in its width, because I'll give it to you. Then Abram moved his tent and came and lived by the oaks of Mamre, which is in Hebron. And there he built an altar to the Lord.
And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee. Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.

Because all the country you can see, I'll give to you and to your offspring for good.

For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.
And I'll make your offspring like the dust of the earth. If a man could count the dust, then he could count them.
