And the Lord said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father's household, and go to the land I'll show you. I'll make you into a great nation, and I'll bless you. I'll make your name great, and you'll be a blessing. I'll bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I'll curse. And through you every family on earth will be blessed.” So Abram went, just as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five when he left Haran. He took Sarai his wife and Lot his nephew, and everything they'd built up, and the people they'd taken on in Haran, and they set out for Canaan. And they got there.

Into the land
Abram travelled through the country as far as the site of Shechem, to the great tree of Moreh. The Canaanites were in the land at the time. And the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “I'm giving this land to your descendants.” So Abram built an altar there to the Lord, who'd appeared to him. From there he moved on to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel to the west and Ai to the east. He built an altar there to the Lord, and called on the name of the Lord. Then Abram kept moving on, heading south.

Down to Egypt
There was a famine in the land, so Abram went down to Egypt to stay a while, because the famine was bad. As he was about to go into Egypt he said to Sarai his wife, “Look — I know what a good-looking woman you are. When the Egyptians see you they'll say, ‘That's his wife,’ and they'll kill me and keep you alive. Say you're my sister, so it goes well for me on your account, and my life is spared because of you.”
There was a famine in the land, so Abram went down to Egypt to stay a while, because the famine was bad.
As he was about to go into Egypt he said to Sarai his wife, “Look — I know what a good-looking woman you are.
When the Egyptians see you they'll say, ‘That's his wife,’ and they'll kill me and keep you alive.
Say you're my sister, so it goes well for me on your account, and my life is spared because of you.”
Pharaoh
And when Abram came into Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. Pharaoh's officials saw her and talked her up to Pharaoh, and she was taken into Pharaoh's house. And Pharaoh treated Abram well on her account. He came out of it with sheep and cattle and donkeys, male and female servants, and camels. But the Lord struck Pharaoh and his household with serious diseases, because of Sarai, Abram's wife. So Pharaoh sent for Abram. “What have you done to me? Why didn't you tell me she was your wife? Why did you say she was your sister, so that I took her as my wife? Here's your wife. Take her and go.” And Pharaoh gave orders about him, and they sent him on his way with his wife and everything he had.
