Ezra hears the report

Now when all this was done, the princes came to me and said: The people of Israel, and the priests and the Levites, haven't kept themselves separate from the peoples of the lands and their detestable practices — the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians and Amorites. Because they have taken their daughters for themselves and for their sons, so the holy seed has mixed itself with the peoples of those lands. And the hand of the princes and rulers has been foremost in this unfaithfulness. And when I heard this, I tore my clothes and my robe, and pulled hair out of my head and my beard, and sat down stunned. Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel gathered around me, because of the unfaithfulness of the exiles. And I sat there stunned until the evening sacrifice. And at the evening sacrifice I got up out of my heaviness, and with my clothes and my robe torn I fell on my knees and spread out my hands to the Lord my God,

Now when these things were done, the leaders came to me: The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites haven't set themselves apart from the peoples of the lands, doing according to their disgusting things — of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians and the Amorites. Because they've taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons. So the holy offspring have mixed themselves with the peoples of those lands. Yes, the hand of the leaders and rulers has been chief in this breaking of faith. And when I heard this, I tore my clothes and my robe, and pulled hair out of my head and my beard, and sat down shocked. Then everyone who shook at the words of the God of Israel gathered to me, because of the breaking of faith of the ones who'd been carried off. And I sat shocked till the evening sacrifice. And at the evening sacrifice I got up from where I'd been brought low. And with my clothes and my robe torn, I fell on my knees and spread out my hands to the Lord my God.

Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass. And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied. Then were assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the transgression of those that had been carried away; and I sat astonied until the evening sacrifice. And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God,

Ezra's prayer

and said: My God, I am ashamed. I blush to lift up my face to you, my God. Because our wrongs have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has grown up to the heavens. From the days of our fathers to this day we have been deep in guilt. And for our wrongs we, our kings and our priests have been handed over to the kings of the lands — to the sword, to captivity, to plunder and to open shame, as it is today. And now, for a brief moment, grace has been shown us by the Lord our God, in leaving us a group of survivors to escape, and in giving us a nail in his holy place — so our God can light up our eyes and give us a little relief in our slavery. Because we were slaves. Yet our God has not abandoned us in our slavery. He has shown us mercy through the kings of Persia, giving us relief, helping us rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins, and giving us protection in Judah and Jerusalem. And now, our God, what can we say after this? Because we have abandoned your commandments, which you gave through your servants the prophets, saying: The land you are going in to possess is an unclean land, made unclean by the peoples of the lands and their detestable practices, which have filled it from one end to the other with their impurity. So don't give your daughters to their sons, and don't take their daughters for your sons. Don't seek their peace or their prosperity, ever — so you may be strong and eat the good of the land, and leave it to your children as an inheritance forever. And after everything that has come on us for our evil deeds and our great guilt — seeing that you, our God, have punished us less than our wrongs deserve, and have given us rescue like this — should we break your commandments again and intermarry with the peoples who do these detestable things? Wouldn't you be angry with us until you had consumed us, so there were no survivors and nobody left to escape? Lord God of Israel, you are righteous. We remain escaped, as it is this day. Here we are before you in our trespasses, for we cannot stand before you because of this.

And I said: My God, I'm ashamed and go red to lift up my face to you, my God. Because what we've done wrong has grown over our head, and our guilt has grown up to the heavens. Since the days of our fathers we've been in great guilt right to this day. And for what we've done wrong we, our kings and our priests, have been handed over into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity and to plunder and to shame of face, the way it is today. And now for a little moment favour has been shown from the Lord our God, to leave us the ones who got away and to give us a nail in his holy place, so our God can light our eyes and give us a little life in our slavery. Because we were slaves. But our God hasn't left us in our slavery, but has stretched out mercy to us in front of the kings of Persia, to give us life to set up the house of our God and to repair its ruins, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem. And now, our God, what'll we say after this? Because we've left your orders, that you ordered by your servants the prophets: The land you're going to own is an unclean land, with the filth of the peoples of the lands, with their disgusting things that have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness. So now don't give your daughters to their sons, and don't take their daughters for your sons. And don't look for their peace or their wealth forever — so you can be strong and eat the good of the land and leave it as an inheritance to your children forever. And after everything that's come on us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt — seeing you our God have punished us less than what we've done wrong deserves, and have given us a rescue like this — should we break your orders again and join in marriage with the people of these disgusting things? Wouldn't you be angry with us till you'd finished us, so there'd be no remnant or one who got away? Lord God of Israel, you're righteous. Because we're left as the ones who got away, the way it is today. Look — we're in front of you in our guilt. Because nobody can stand in front of you because of this.

And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens. Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day. And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage. For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem. And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments, Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness. And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this; Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping? O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
