The people answer
Now while Ezra was praying and confessing, weeping and throwing himself down before the house of God, a very large crowd of Israelites gathered around him — men, women and children — and the people wept bitterly. And Shechaniah son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, spoke up and said to Ezra: We have been unfaithful to our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land. But even now there is hope for Israel in this. So let us make a covenant with our God to send away all the wives and those born of them, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God. And let it be done according to the law. Rise up. This matter rests with you, and we are with you. Be strong and do it. Then Ezra got up and made the leading priests and the Levites and all Israel swear they would do as had been said. And they swore it. Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God and went into the chamber of Johanan son of Eliashib. And when he got there he ate no bread and drank no water, because he was mourning over the unfaithfulness of the exiles. And they sent a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem to all the exiles, that they should gather at Jerusalem, and that anyone who didn't come within three days would have all his goods forfeited, by the decision of the princes and the elders, and would himself be cut off from the assembly of the exiles. So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered at Jerusalem within three days. It was the twentieth day of the ninth month. And all the people sat in the open square in front of the house of God, trembling over this matter and because of the heavy rain. And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them: You have been unfaithful. You have married foreign women, and added to the guilt of Israel. So now, make confession to the Lord God of your fathers and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives. Then the whole assembly answered with a loud voice: You are right. We must do as you say. But the people are many, and it is a time of heavy rain, and we can't stand outside. And this isn't the work of a day or two, because many of us have gone wrong in this matter. Let our rulers act for the whole assembly. Then let everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at appointed times, with the elders and judges of each town, until the fierce anger of our God over this matter is turned away from us. Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahaziah son of Tikvah were employed about this matter, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them. And the exiles did so. Ezra the priest, with certain heads of families, chosen by family and all of them by name, sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. And by the first day of the first month they had finished with all the men who had married foreign women.
Now when Ezra had prayed and confessed, weeping and throwing himself down in front of the house of God, a very great gathering of men and women and children gathered to him out of Israel. Because the people wept badly. And Shekaniah son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said to Ezra: We've broken faith against our God and have taken foreign wives of the peoples of the land. But there's hope in Israel about this now. So let's make a covenant now with our God to send away all the wives and the ones born of them, according to the counsel of my lord and of the ones who shake at the order of our God. And let it be done according to the teaching. Get up, because this matter belongs to you. We'll be with you too. Be strong and do it. Then Ezra got up and made the chief priests, the Levites and all Israel swear they'd do according to this word. And they swore. Then Ezra got up from in front of the house of God and went into the room of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. And when he came there, he didn't eat bread or drink water. Because he mourned over the breaking of faith of the ones who'd been carried off. And they had it called out through Judah and Jerusalem to all the children of the captivity, that they should gather together at Jerusalem. And whoever wouldn't come within three days, according to the counsel of the leaders and the elders — everything he had would be set apart, and he'd be cut off from the gathering of the ones who'd been carried off. Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together at Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month. And all the people sat in the street of the house of God, shaking because of this matter and because of the heavy rain. And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them: You've broken faith and have taken foreign wives, to make the guilt of Israel bigger. So now own up to the Lord God of your fathers and do what pleases him. And set yourselves apart from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives. Then all the gathering answered with a loud voice: We'll do what you've said. But there are plenty of people, and it's a time of heavy rain. And we can't stand outside, and this isn't a work of one day or two. Because there are plenty of us who've stepped over the line in this thing. Let our rulers of all the gathering stand now, and let everyone in our towns who's taken foreign wives come at set times, and with them the elders of every town and its judges, till the fierce anger of our God about this matter is turned from us. Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah stood against this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them. And the children of the captivity did that. And Ezra the priest was set apart, with certain heads of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, all of them by their names. And they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to look into the matter. And they finished with all the men who'd taken foreign wives by the first day of the first month.
Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore. And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing. Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law. Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it. Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to this word. And they sware. Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away. And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem; And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away. Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain. Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives. Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do. But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing. Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us.
