And I sent them to Iddo, the chief at the place called Casiphia, and I told them what to say to Iddo and his brothers the temple servants at Casiphia — that they should bring us ministers for the house of our God. And by the good hand of our God on us, they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli son of Levi son of Israel — and Sherebiah, with his sons and brothers, eighteen men; and Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, with his brothers and their sons, twenty men; and two hundred and twenty of the temple servants, whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites. All of them were listed by name. Then I called a fast there at the river of Ahava, so we could humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a right way for ourselves, our little ones and all our goods. Because I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from the enemy on the road. We had told the king, The hand of our God is on everyone who seeks him, for good — but his power and his anger are against everyone who turns away from him. So we fasted and prayed to our God about this, and he answered us.

Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests: Sherebiah, Hashabiah and ten of their brothers with them. And I weighed out to them the silver and the gold and the vessels — the offering for the house of our God, which the king and his counsellors and his lords and all Israel there had given. I weighed into their hands six hundred and fifty talents of silver, silver vessels weighing a hundred talents, a hundred talents of gold, twenty gold bowls worth a thousand drams, and two vessels of fine copper, as precious as gold. And I said to them, You are holy to the Lord, and the vessels are holy too, and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering to the Lord God of your fathers. Watch over them and keep them until you weigh them out before the leading priests and the Levites and the heads of families of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the Lord. So the priests and the Levites took charge of the silver and the gold and the vessels by weight, to bring them to Jerusalem, to the house of our God. Then we set out from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month to go to Jerusalem. And the hand of our God was on us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and from ambush along the way. And we came to Jerusalem and stayed there three days. Now on the fourth day the silver and the gold and the vessels were weighed out in the house of our God into the hand of Meremoth son of Uriah the priest, and with him Eleazar son of Phinehas, and with them Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui, the Levites. Everything was checked by number and by weight, and the whole weight was written down at that time. And the exiles who had come back out of captivity offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel: twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, and twelve male goats as a sin offering. All of it was a burnt offering to the Lord. And they handed the king's commissions over to the king's lieutenants and to the governors beyond the River, and they gave their support to the people and to the house of God.
