Now after all this, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, there was Ezra son of Seraiah, son of Azariah, son of Hilkiah, son of Shallum, son of Zadok, son of Ahitub, son of Amariah, son of Azariah, son of Meraioth, son of Zerahiah, son of Uzzi, son of Bukki, son of Abishua, son of Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the chief priest. This Ezra came up from Babylon. He was a scribe well versed in the law of Moses, which the Lord God of Israel had given. And the king granted him everything he asked, because the hand of the Lord his God was on him. And some of the Israelites went up to Jerusalem, along with priests and Levites and singers and gatekeepers and temple servants, in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes. And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, in the seventh year of the king. He set out from Babylon on the first day of the first month, and came to Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month, because the good hand of his God was on him. For Ezra had set his heart on studying the law of the Lord, and on doing it, and on teaching its rules and judgements in Israel.

Now this is a copy of the letter King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe — a scribe of the words of the commandments of the Lord and of his rules to Israel. Artaxerxes, king of kings, to Ezra the priest, scribe of the law of the God of heaven: perfect peace, and at such a time. I give an order that any of the people of Israel in my kingdom, including their priests and Levites, who choose of their own free will to go up to Jerusalem, may go with you. You are sent by the king and his seven counsellors to enquire about Judah and Jerusalem according to the law of your God, which is in your hand, and to carry the silver and gold that the king and his counsellors have freely offered to the God of Israel, whose dwelling is in Jerusalem, along with all the silver and gold you can find in the whole province of Babylon, and the freewill offerings of the people and the priests, given willingly for the house of their God in Jerusalem. With this money, then, buy without delay bulls, rams and lambs, with their grain offerings and drink offerings, and offer them on the altar of the house of your God in Jerusalem. And whatever seems good to you and your brothers to do with the rest of the silver and gold, do it according to the will of your God. And the vessels given to you for the service of the house of your God, hand them over in full before the God of Jerusalem. And whatever else is needed for the house of your God, which you have occasion to provide, provide it out of the royal treasury. And I, King Artaxerxes, give an order to all the treasurers beyond the River, that whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, asks of you, it is to be done without delay — up to a hundred talents of silver, a hundred measures of wheat, a hundred baths of wine and a hundred baths of oil, and salt without limit. Whatever the God of heaven has commanded, let it be done carefully for the house of the God of heaven. Why should there be anger against the realm of the king and his sons? We also inform you that it is not lawful to impose tribute, tax or toll on any of the priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple servants or other servants of this house of God. And you, Ezra, by the wisdom of your God which is in your hand, appoint magistrates and judges to judge all the people beyond the River — all who know the laws of your God. And teach those who don't know them. And whoever won't keep the law of your God and the law of the king, let judgement be carried out on him promptly, whether death, banishment, seizure of goods or imprisonment. Blessed be the Lord God of our fathers, who put such a thing as this into the king's heart, to beautify the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, and who has shown me mercy before the king and his counsellors and all the king's mighty princes. And I was strengthened, because the hand of the Lord my God was on me, and I gathered leading men out of Israel to go up with me.
