The tent of meeting outside the camp
The Lord said to Moses, 'Leave this place, you and the people you brought out of Egypt. Go up to the land I swore to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, “I will give it to your descendants.”' I'll send an angel before you, and I'll drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite — 'Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go up among you, because you're a stubborn mob and I might finish you off on the way.' When the people heard this bad news, they mourned. And nobody put on his jewels. Because the Lord had said to Moses: Say to the Israelites: You're a stubborn mob. I'll come up among you in a moment and finish you off. So now take off your jewels, so I know what to do with you. The Israelites stripped themselves of their jewels by Mount Horeb. Moses took the tent and pitched it outside the camp, a long way off from the camp, and called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who looked for the Lord went out to the tent of meeting, that was outside the camp. When Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose and stood, every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses till he'd gone into the tent. When Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud came down and stood at the door of the tent, and the Lord talked with Moses. All the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the tent door. And all the people rose and bowed down, every man in his tent door. The Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. Then Moses returned to the camp, but his servant Joshua son of Nun, a young man, stayed at the tent.
And the Lord said to Moses: Go up from here, you and the people you've brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land I swore to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob: I'll give it to your offspring. And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it: And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite: Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way. And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp. And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle. And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses. And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door. And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.

Show me your glory
Moses said to the Lord, 'You've told me to lead these people up, but you haven't told me whom you're sending with me. Yet you say you know me by name and that I've found grace in your eyes.' 'So now, if I have found grace in your eyes, please show me your way, so I may know you and continue to find grace in your eyes. And remember that this nation is your people.' The Lord said, 'My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.' Moses answered, 'If your presence doesn't go with us, don't send us up from here.' 'How will anyone know that I and your people have found grace in your eyes unless you go with us? That's what will distinguish us — me and your people — from every other people on earth.' The Lord told Moses, 'I'll do this thing you've asked as well, because you've found grace in my eyes, and I know you by name.' Moses said, 'Please, show me your glory.' The Lord said, 'I will make all my goodness pass before you and proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and show mercy to whom I will show mercy.' 'But you cannot see my face, for no man can see me and live.' The Lord said, 'There is a place here by me. Stand on the rock.' When my glory passes by, I’ll put you in a crack in the rock and cover you with my hand until I’ve passed by. 'Then I will take away my hand and you will see my back parts, but my face must not be seen.'
And Moses said to the Lord: Look — you say to me: Bring this people up. And you haven't let me know who you'll send with me. But you've said: I know you by name, and you've found favour in my sight too. So now, please, if I've found favour in your sight, show me your way now, so I can know you and find favour in your sight. And think about it, that this nation is your people. And he said: My presence will go with you, and I'll give you rest. And he said to him: If your presence doesn't go with me, don't carry us up from here. Because how will it be known that I and your people have found favour in your sight? Isn't it that you go with us? So we'll be set apart, I and your people, from all the people on the face of the earth. And the Lord said to Moses: I'll do this thing you've said too. Because you've found favour in my sight, and I know you by name. And he said: Show me your glory, please. And he said: I'll make all my goodness go past in front of you, and I'll call out the name of the Lord in front of you. And I'll be gracious to whoever I'll be gracious to, and I'll show mercy to whoever I'll show mercy to. And he said: You can't see my face. Because no man will see me and live. And the Lord said: Look — there's a place by me, and you'll stand on a rock. And while my glory goes past, I'll put you in a cleft of the rock and cover you with my hand while I go past. And I'll take away my hand, and you'll see my back. But my face won't be seen.
And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight. Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people. And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence. For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth. And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name. And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory. And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy. And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

'But you cannot see my face, for no man can see me and live.'
And he said: You can't see my face. Because no man will see me and live.
And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
The Lord said, 'There is a place here by me. Stand on the rock.'
And the Lord said: Look — there's a place by me, and you'll stand on a rock.
And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
When my glory passes by, I’ll put you in a crack in the rock and cover you with my hand until I’ve passed by.
