The golden calf
When the people saw Moses was taking a long time coming down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. 'Come on,' they said. 'Make us gods to go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us out of Egypt, we don't know what's happened to him.' Aaron told them, 'Take the golden earrings from the ears of your wives, sons and daughters, and bring them to me.' All the people broke off the golden earrings in their ears and brought them to Aaron. Aaron received the gold, shaped it with an engraving tool and made a molten calf. Then they said, 'These are your gods, Israel, who brought you out of Egypt.' When Aaron saw it, he built an altar in front of it. And Aaron called out: Tomorrow is a feast to the Lord. They rose early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose to play. The Lord said to Moses, 'Go down. Your people, whom you brought out of Egypt, have corrupted themselves.' 'They've turned aside quickly from the way I commanded them. They've made a molten calf, worshipped it, sacrificed to it and said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you out of Egypt.”' The Lord said to Moses, 'I've seen this people. They're a stubborn lot.' 'Now leave me alone, so my anger can burn against them and consume them. Then I'll make a great nation out of you.' But Moses pleaded with the Lord his God: 'Lord, why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?' 'Why let the Egyptians say, “He brought them out with evil intent, to kill them in the mountains and wipe them from the earth”? Turn from your fierce anger and repent of this evil against your people.' 'Remember Abraham, Isaac and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by yourself: “I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and give them all this land I promised, and they will inherit it forever.”' And the Lord repented of the evil he had thought to do to his people.

Moses breaks the tablets
Moses turned and went down from the mountain, with the two tables of the testimony in his hand. The tablets were written on both sides. They were written on one side and on the other. The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, cut on the tablets. When Joshua heard the people shouting, he said to Moses, 'Sounds like there's a battle going on in the camp.' Moses said, 'That's not the sound of victory, and it's not the sound of defeat. What I hear is singing.' As Moses came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger flared. He threw the tables from his hands and smashed them at the foot of the mountain. He took the calf they'd made, burned it in the fire, ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it. Moses said to Aaron, 'What did these people do to you that you brought such a massive sin on them?' Aaron said, 'Don't let my lord's anger burn. You know what these people are like — they're set on mischief.' 'They told me, “Make us gods to go before us. As for this Moses who brought us out of Egypt, we don't know what's happened to him.”' 'So I said, “Whoever has any gold, take it off.” They gave it to me, I chucked it in the fire — and out popped this calf.' When Moses saw the people were out of hand — because Aaron had let them get out of hand, to their shame among their enemies — Moses stood at the entrance to the camp and called out, 'Who's on the Lord's side? Come to me.' All the sons of Levi gathered around him. He told them, 'This is what the Lord God of Israel says: Strap on your swords. Go back and forth through the camp from gate to gate, and kill your brothers, companions and neighbours.' The sons of Levi did what Moses commanded, and about three thousand men fell that day. Moses had told them, 'Consecrate yourselves to the Lord today, even though it means standing against your own sons and brothers, so he may give you a blessing this day.'

And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:) Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD’s side? let him come unto me. And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour. And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men. For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves today to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.

Moses pleads for the people
The next day Moses told the people, 'You've committed a great sin. Now I'll go up to the Lord. Perhaps I can make an atonement for your sin.' Moses returned to the Lord and said, 'Oh, these people have committed a great sin and made themselves gods of gold.' 'Yet now, if you will forgive their sin — and if not, please blot me out of the book you have written.' The Lord said to Moses: Whoever has sinned against me, I'll wipe him out of my book. So go now, lead the people to the place I've told you about. Look, my angel will go before you. But on the day I deal with them, I'll deal with their sin on them. The Lord struck the people because they made the calf that Aaron made.

The Lord said to Moses: Whoever has sinned against me, I'll wipe him out of my book.
