The Ten Words
God spoke all these words: 'I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.' 'You must have no other gods before me.' 'You must not make for yourself any carved idol, or any likeness of anything in heaven above, on the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth.' 'You must not bow down to them or serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the wrongdoing of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,' 'and showing mercy to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.' 'You must not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold guiltless anyone who takes his name in vain.' 'Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.' 'Six days you will labour and do all your work,' 'but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord your God. On it you must do no work — you, your son, your daughter, your male servant, your female servant, your livestock, or the foreigner living in your towns.' 'For in six days the Lord made heaven, earth and sea, and everything in them, and rested the seventh day. So the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.' 'Honour your father and your mother, so your days may be long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.' 'You must not kill.' 'You must not commit adultery.' 'You must not steal.' 'You must not bear false witness against your neighbour.' You must not desire your neighbour's house. You must not desire your neighbour's wife, his male servant, female servant, ox, donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.'

You won't do any work in it — you or your son or your daughter, your servant or your servant woman or your cattle, or your stranger inside your gates. The people stand a long way off
All the people saw the thunder, lightning, trumpet blast and mountain smoking. When they saw it, they backed away and stood at a distance. They told Moses, 'You speak to us and we'll listen. But don't let God speak directly to us, or we'll die.' Moses said, 'Don't be afraid. God has come to test you, so the fear of him will remain before you and keep you from sinning.' The people stayed at a distance, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was. The Lord said to Moses: This is what you'll say to the Israelites. You've seen that I've talked with you from heaven. You won't make gods of silver alongside me, and you won't make yourselves gods of gold. 'Make me an altar of earth and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and your cattle. In every place where I record my name, I will come to you and bless you.' 'If you make me an altar of stone, do not build it from cut stone, because using your tool on it profanes it.' You won't go up by steps to my altar, so your nakedness isn't uncovered on it.
And all the people saw the thunder and the lightning and the noise of the trumpet and the mountain smoking. And when the people saw it, they moved back and stood a long way off. And they said to Moses: You speak with us and we'll listen. But don't let God speak with us, or we'll die. And Moses said to the people: Don't be frightened. Because God has come to test you, and so his fear will be in front of you, so you don't sin. And the people stood a long way off, and Moses came near the thick darkness where God was. And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold. An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee. And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.
