A kingdom of priests
In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt, on that very day, they came into the wilderness of Sinai. They had set out from Rephidim and entered the wilderness of Sinai, where they camped before the mountain. Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain: 'This is what you must tell the house of Jacob and the Israelites:' 'You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself.' So now, if you truly obey my voice and keep my covenant, you will be my treasured possession above all people, because the whole earth is mine. 'You will be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.' Moses came and called for the elders of the people and set before them all these words the Lord had commanded him. All the people answered together, 'Everything the Lord has spoken, we will do.' Moses brought their answer back to the Lord. The Lord told Moses, 'I am coming to you in a thick cloud, so the people may hear when I speak with you and believe you forever.' Then Moses reported the people's words to the Lord. The Lord said to Moses, 'Go to the people and make them holy today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes,' 'and be ready for the third day. On the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in full view of all the people.' You'll set limits for the people all round: Watch out that you don't go up into the mountain or touch the edge of it. Whoever touches the mountain will surely be put to death. No hand will touch him, but he'll be stoned for sure or shot through. Whether it's animal or man, it won't live. When the trumpet sounds long, they'll come up to the mountain. Moses went down from the mountain to the people and made the people holy. And they washed their clothes. He said to the people: Be ready for the third day. Don't go near a woman.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes, And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death: There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount. And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes. And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third day: come not at your wives.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD.

Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the bottom of the mountain. Mount Sinai was completely covered in smoke because the Lord descended on it in fire. The smoke rose like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain shook violently. When the voice of the trumpet sounded long and got louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him by a voice. The Lord came down on the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses up to the summit. Moses went up. The Lord told Moses, 'Go down and warn the people not to break through to gaze at the Lord, or many of them will perish.' And let the priests too who come near the Lord make themselves holy, or the Lord will break out on them. Moses said to the Lord: The people can't come up to Mount Sinai. Because you warned us: Set limits around the mountain and make it holy. The Lord said to him: Go down. And you'll come up, you and Aaron with you. But don't let the priests and the people break through to come up to the Lord, or he'll break out on them. So Moses went down to the people and told them.

And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up. And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish. And let the priests also, which come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them. And Moses said unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it. And the LORD said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest he break forth upon them. So Moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them.
