Water from the rock
The whole assembly of Israel set out from the wilderness of Sin, travelling from place to place at the Lord's command, and camped at Rephidim. But there was no water for the people to drink. So the people argued with Moses. 'Give us water to drink!' Moses said, 'Why are you arguing with me? Why are you testing the Lord?' The people were desperately thirsty and complained to Moses: 'Why did you bring us out of Egypt? To kill us, our children and our livestock with thirst?' Moses cried to the Lord, 'What am I supposed to do with these people? They're nearly ready to stone me.' The Lord said to Moses: Go on in front of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. And take your staff in your hand, that you struck the Nile with, and go. 'I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out for the people to drink.' Moses did so before the elders of Israel. He named the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarrelled and tested the Lord, saying, 'Is the Lord among us or not?'

And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go. The battle with Amalek
Then Amalek came and fought Israel in Rephidim. Moses said to Joshua: Choose us men and go out, fight Amalek. Tomorrow I'll stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand. So Joshua did what Moses said to him and fought Amalek. And Moses, Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the hill. Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed. When he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. Moses' hands grew heavy, so they put a stone under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on each side, keeping them steady until sunset. And Joshua beat Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. The Lord said to Moses: Write this in a book as a reminder and say it in the ears of Joshua. Because I'll completely wipe out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Moses built an altar and called its name The Lord Is My Banner. Because he said: The Lord has sworn that the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.
