Grumbling in the wilderness
They set out from Elim, and the whole assembly of the Israelites came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they came out of the land of Egypt. The whole assembly of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The Israelites said, 'If only we'd died by the Lord's hand back in Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread until we were full. You've brought this whole mob into the wilderness to starve us to death.' The Lord said to Moses, 'I will rain bread from heaven for you. The people will go out each day and gather enough for that day, so I can test whether they'll walk in my law.' On the sixth day they'll get ready what they bring in, and it'll be twice as much as they gather daily. Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites: In the evening you'll know the Lord has brought you out from the land of Egypt. And in the morning you'll see the glory of the Lord, because he hears your grumblings against the Lord. And what are we, that you grumble against us? Moses said, 'The Lord will give you meat in the evening and bread until you're full in the morning, because he's heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You're not really grumbling against us — you're grumbling against the Lord.' They had no idea what it was. Moses told them, 'This is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.' 'This is what the Lord commanded: Gather as much as each person needs — an omer for each person, according to the number in your tent.' The Israelites did that and gathered, some more and some less. When they measured it with an omer, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no shortage. Each had gathered according to what he needed. Moses said: Don't let any man leave any of it till the morning. Some ignored Moses and kept part of it until morning. It bred worms and stank, and Moses was furious with them. They gathered it every morning, every man according to what he ate. And when the sun got hot, it melted. On the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man. And all the leaders of the assembly came and told Moses. He said to them: This is what the Lord has said. Tomorrow is the rest of the holy sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you'll bake today, and boil what you'll boil. And what's left over, lay it up for yourselves to be kept till the morning. They kept it until morning, as Moses commanded. It did not stink, and there were no worms in it. Moses said, 'Eat it today, because today is a sabbath to the Lord. You will not find it in the field today.' Six days you'll gather it. But on the seventh day, the sabbath, there won't be any. Even so, some of the people went out to gather on the seventh day — and found nothing. The Lord said to Moses, 'How long are you lot going to refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?' See — because the Lord has given you the sabbath, that's why he gives you the bread of two days on the sixth day. Stay every man in his place. Don't let any man go out of his place on the seventh day. So the people rested on the seventh day. The people of Israel called it Manna. It was white like coriander seed, and it tasted like wafers made with honey. Moses said: This is what the Lord commands. Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations, so they can see the bread I fed you with in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt. Moses said to Aaron: Take a pot and put an omer full of manna in it, and lay it up before the Lord, to be kept for your generations. See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.
